That's exactly what I did. It's slow, but it works.

Or you could go to Stevens Creek, mention that you want the i-club hook-up, and get a discount.

Oh, and everyone there will know what you're talking about, because everyone who works in there is a member on here.

always, always remove the fill plug first for exactly this reason.

You might try this to avoid any further damage to the flats in the plug. http://ultimatetoolco.com/drainplugs.aspx

I don't like the idea of blasting that plug off.
WD40 sucks as a penetrating oil. Instead do this:

Make a 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone (nail polish remover)
Put is in a spray bottle and mist the bolt. Let it sit for 30 min and than try again

This makes pretty much the best penetrating oil on earth. It will take half the torque of WD40 to break free

What are the torque specs for the fill and drain plugs?

Now, I have a real problem.. I borrowed my co=worker's impact gun and the 1/2" drive thread on the top drain bolt of the differential is stripped.. ****.. Is there anything I can do ? I dont have any fluid in my differential to take it to Capitol Subaru.. It's not even just a matter of replacing the fill bolt anymore. Do I have to replace the whole differential?? Will this cost me 2-3 thousand dollars?!? I did this on my own to save some money on my 90k service, looks like ill be spending more than what the service costs.. what a PITA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dude just pull the goddam cover off and drill the plug, and hacksaw it out!! the diff housing is cast iron, the cover is aluminum.

you definitrly don't need to replace the whole assembly/

take a look at post #13. I told you that this would happen.

if this was me, I would see if a 1/2" can still somewhat fit in there. then go get a cheap breaker bar or rachet (harbor freight for like $15) and use JB weld and bond the breaker bar to the bolt. BE REAL CAREFUL AND NOT LET JB weld go all over your diff cover.

once cured, remove the bolt. obviously your breaker bar and bolt is garbage.

I'll try to remove the diff cover and take the bolt off some other way (cannot afford a perrin differential cover and i sure as hell cant afford another 30% of fluid) tomorrow.. BTW, does anyone know the part number of the filler bolt? Because i'll need to have it replaced for sure.. AHHH DAMN IT, also .. Is there a torque spec for those diff cover bolts ? just want to make sure everything is tight and secure when i put it back in.. thanks...

P.S: the above pic sure looks like an easy solution although its the bolt that got shredded that i'm mainly concerned with.. But thanks for the subaru hope

Someone that touched the top bolt last, sure as hell didn't want it coming out, that's for damn sure

Get a 1/2" breaker with a pipe AND get another person. One person has to be under the car to make sure the 1/2" breaker is in there nice and square.

Good luck, you should've loosened the fill before the drain plug.
Post #13 is full of good info. Bolded is what I was taught is the most important part of a diff oil change.
