If I want to save myself money I'll shop online. If I want to support a local shop I'll buy it at a price that helps them stay in business. No sense in making them move a product for little to no profit. But thats just me and another way to look at things.

The loss leader thing is a crock these days... nothing in the performance industry (other than sub $10 items) really has any margin anymore. I can tell you, when I was still in the industry, we were happy to get 14% on a $2000 set of wheels. Most business need to make 30-50% to be profitable.
The catalogs wrecked it in the 1990's - that's why you don't see local speed shops like Super Shops or Speed Merchant anymore. Most of you guys are probably too young to have experienced walking into a speed shop and walking out with what you needed.
