on that note...do you'all know of any good portuguese restaurants in the bay. I'm talking classic, homestyle portuguese, not Duarte's in Pescadero.

I have a Portuguese friend from NY that visits now and again. He's taken me to some awesome places to eat in Newark. I want to oblige on the west coast when he visits.

Ya we really dont have any good Portuguese restaurants. We have Sousa's Restaurant on Alum Rock Ave. in SJ but I dont even consider that homestyle Portuguese food. The good thing that they have is the Carne de Porco a Alentejana everyhthing else is so so.

Their is La Sallete in Sonoma. My wife and her parents have been there and liked it.

A real popular Brazilan Restaurant in SF, called Espetus Churrascaria. I'm yet still to go there but have heard great things from friends that have ate there. They also have a location in San Mateo

Thanks for the heads-up.

As for Brazilian, I can vouch for Canto do Brasil. It's not half bad

When I went to Hawaii on vacation I was just amazed how much the Portuguese had an influence in Hawaii.
From the food to the vocabulary. They way the Hawaiians pronounce the vowels is the same way the Portuguese do.
When the wife and I went to the Polynesian Cultural Center our tour guy explained to us in order to read the street signs you have to sound out the vowels. Then he threw this one out. Pi-pe-li-ne. So people sounded it out using the vowels. He starts laughing and says actually here in Hawaii we just say Pipeline.

Lots of Portuguese influence on grammar in Pidgin English (the local manner of speech) as well. For example, the use of "stay" in present participle conjugation: "Ho brah, who stay jammin' up on stage deah?" ("Hey bro, who's that jamming up there on stage right now?") and the use of "one" instead of "a" as a particle denoting the singular: "Eh, get one lightah?" ("Hey, do you have a lighter?")
