You can consider getting a brand new crate motor if it's within your budget. A 1.8L costs just under $2k and a 1.6L a little less than that. You can only get these prices if you sign up with Mazda's Racing Team Support Program: http://www.mazdamotorsports.com/ They can supply you with a lot of performance parts for really good prices. I would say 30% less than retail. I have to consider some work on my motor for my 94 Miata soon. It's starting to spew white smoke on higher RPMs.
