Any idea what could cause this?

went over to a friends today. he wanted to check a plug on my harness to compare to his hes working on. So we walked out to my car and popped my hood. Well after a minute, i notice that one of my belts is off the pulley. Then we realize that the pulley is gone. Not missing, but DESTROYED. So the belt kept spinning without a pulley and wore a hole in my timing cover.

So heres whats left of the tensioner pulley for the AC

and heres whats left of it where it should be, and the hole in my timing cover

So has anyone had a pulley just fail like that? Or know what else could possibly cause this to happen?

Didnt have any weird noises or feel anything while driving.

So for now, no AC till it gets fixed and I have plastic shavings on my engine and on my header heat shield melted to it haha.

Too tight? Or maybe the pulley was just old.

That's still pretty gnar.

Im guessing just age. I havnt touched the belt in forever so unless someone else tightened it, it wasnt over tight.

But yea still weird

Mine squeaks a little.... probably time to change it.

On the International truck that I drive at work we have had the bearings on 2 pulleys seize up, the pulley falls off, and the belt is wrapped up or shredded just like that. That truck is way to loud to hear a minor squeak, but on my car if I can hear it at idle I can tell that the bearing is going.

Damn, **** and that is whack! I have never seen that happen, but I often look suspiciously at my PLASTIC idler pulley. What a stupid idea and I will definitely keep a better eye on mine (once my engine is running of course).
