Talking Any Dirt Roads near Reno, Nevada?

I'm going to Reno in three weeks, I know there are quit a few off roads in the area but I forgot where they were. One of them is near a horse rental place. Any suggestions? Thanks

Please give directions from I-80 if possible.

Every peice of land that you can see in Nevada (dirt/desert) is property of the Beaurau of Land Managenment. This is great because you can LEGALLY take a vehicle ANYWHERE YOU WANT!

I don't know specifically where to go, but anywhere east of Reno like Fernely has pretty good trails.

Well, off the top of my head, 2 favorites are:

Dog Valley Road, easy access from I 80 (eastbound)
Exit Gold Ranch Exit, just inside the border,
Go east along the north side of the highway this is called 3rd street, turn left on brige street, follow to end, you'll see trail head signs ( I think) You can even mapquest this area,, just search for "Verdi" NV, and the road comes up as Henness Pass. It will be covered in snow and ice right now. This could be the one near the horse rental place you are talking about

Or , if you go south down passed Carson City, there are some great roads off 395 south near Minden, nv. Take Johnson or Stephanie road until they dead end (east of 395) and you see access to teh hills...awesome roads, also will be covered in ice right now

Hope that helps, If you're in Reno on Thursday, we have our weekly Subie Club meets on that night...usually a good turn out.

See ya, Drift Safely
Matt

Dog Valley to Henness pass is probably only accessible by snowmobile at this time of year, although some segments of it north of Truckee off 89 might be kept open.

I highly reccomend going to a bookstore and getting the "Benchmark Maps" book for Nevada, and the one for California.

If you want to see where dirt roads are, Benchmark makes by far the best maps I've found for those of us who like to seek the roads less travelled

Actually one shouldn't have to go too far east to get out into the desert where the snow doesn't accumulate, but you're right, snow is going to be easier to find.

A bit further east of Reno ... but the big block between Rt. 80 to the north, Rt. 50 to the south, Rt. 95 to the west and Rt. 305 to the east has HOURS of dirt roads!

I came off Rt. 80 onto Rt. 305 and just a few miles south at the big bend hung a right onto the dirt roads. Just keep heading generally south-west. You will eventually come out onto Rt. 50 just east of Fallon.

Enjoy!
