Losing a brake line on el camino.......

Luckily no one was in front and I was able to make it to a safe place without incident.

Had that happen just over a year ago in the wrx. I went to hit the brakes and heard a weird "pop/blurp" sound and the brake pedal went to the floor and my car didnt stop.

Front right passenger fender liner was soaked and had a steady drip off my brake lines....

Found the culprit:

The brake line is supposed to be stationary through the bracket (below my fingers in the pic) that attach to the strut. So the brake line should not be able to be pushed/pulled through the bracket. Well after 7+ years, guess whatever holds it in place gave out. So the brake line was moving in/out of the brake line with suspension travel ultimately resulting in a tear.

I think they may have been hitting for a while. It was an f style goodridge and the lines aren't coated and I think it may have wiggled it's way towards the wheel or the suspension.

Damn man. Luckily it wasn't when you really needed them.

So, as good as having stainless lines is this is the other side of the coin? Would more regular inspection of the goodridge lines be beneficial? Looks that way. Now I'm questioning my goodridge lines.

Well mine were already installed on the car when i bought it. I had the car for 6 years before it gave out and Im guessing they had been on there for at least another 3 or 4 before I bought it.

I would say just to check and see if the line(s) are "fixed" on the mounting bracket, or if there is any play through it.

One thing to note, there is, as far as I know, a "valid tell" date on most aftermarket SS brake lines, just like racing seat belts and such have. I figure a new set every 6-10 years isn't asking a lot. (and not really all that $). I mean even OEM ones have a designed life of 6-10 years.

Glad you are ok Hide.

I've had wear on several different sets. It's just that sometimes there is contact. Have to inspect stuff when you have the wheels off man.

Luckily, since I've gone super wide in wheels and offset, not really an issue. But it was when the were far closer to stock and with aftermarket lines.

I prefer the stoptechs because of the extra lining on the outside.

Yeah. SS lines have a replacement interval. They don't last nearly as long as stock rubber and they don't show signs of wear like rubber will.

Still gotta keep an eye on them.
