"A car?" Are you kidding? A 2200lb car with upgraded brakes and R compound tires or a '78 BMW Bavaria of un-known mechanical state and tires? That's basically an older 5 series, which is a pretty heavy car. When breaking in my brakes on my Celica, I did repeated hard stops and a few skids to track a pressure difference issue - the skid marks were far less than 20 ft from 25+ mph.

 

take pics of the skid marks!! not digital either.. make sure all your photos are by film.. you can use it against the other guy when it comes down to it. and was he able to see you backing up? any dummy would have slowed down.. especially in such a narrow street in a neighborhood.

That looks pretty bad but don't worry about the estimate $3500 is no big deal. Mine was around 7g's when I was rear ended... got pretty scared that my car would be totalled but it didn't. MAKE SURE they order you a set of JDM tail lights!! They cost less than the OEM ones, just tell the bodyshop.
