Another car insurance thread

I did some searches and read through some threads and wanted to get an update.... so here's the 2010 insurance thread. ha.

Basically I want to know who the best insurance company out there is.
Price is part of it but mostly I want to know who the best company to work with is, who will go to bat for you, who gives you shop options, etc.

I've read online and have a general idea but a lot of them disagree by a huge margin.

Here is why I'm looking....

So I have been with Mercury Insurance for about 10 years. The wife joined on a couple years ago. I have always loved my adjuster and my coverage and never had any issues. Been totally willing to pay a little more than I could get for a budget company in exchange for better service. I had a claim with them years ago and they actually came and picked my car up with a flatbed. Got it fixed and brought it back. I even got a better cd player in the car than I had when it got broken in to.

Well I got laid off and the wife is on maternity leave and we're seeing a finance counselor. She took one look at what we were paying and said we needed to call. My trusty agent immediately went on the attack and berated my counselor and yelled to get off speaker phone. We asked VERY generic questions. He then yelled at my wife, said my counselor was a liar and said to never call him again.

In short... we found out we were INSANELY under covered. talking 15/30 coverage and WAY WAY overpaying.

We made ONE... ONE phone call. We called Allstate and they were mortified by how little coverage we had (since then I've called 4 or 5 other MAJOR companies and they all said the same). They doubled our coverage to 30/60 and saved us $660 annually.

Every company I have called has saved us between $600 and 750 and I have only called the big ones. Allstate. State Farm. AAA. no Gieco, no esurance... no budget companies. Hell AAA took us up to 50/100 and even with the addition of renters insurance and the AAA membership we are like $600 under what we were paying.

So in short... I want a new policy and it has to happen in the next 48 hours. And I want the best company. I don't mess with budget **** to save money. Anything is gonna be saving us money.

So.... if you have Mercury Insurance... check your policy coverage and make some calls because you're probably way overpaying.

Help me pick.

try ameriprise the rate is similar to esurance but when i filed a claim to ameriprise they paid me more then the body shop quoted me. So it worked out good for me. If u have a costco card i think u get a discount too.

Dang, I have been rolling with Progressive since I totaled my first car and my parents kicked me off their policy. I have had a pretty good experience in my eyes. Although I haven't been in any major accidents since switching, I did have some difficulties accessing their website when I wanted to pay my dues once. I figured my internet was just kinda jacked so I was just going to try the next day, but before I could one of their representatives called me personally and set me up with a new password that resolved the situation.

When I got my new car last year, it was super easy to change my coverage and car. I was done and had a proof of insurance tag all within 10 minutes.

Rates aren't too bad. I am 21 with 2 points and a totaled car from 2007 paying $288/month for full coverage on a 2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5i.

I recommend Safeco, I saved like almost 800 bucks a year by switching to them, and when you get renters insurance their discount is so high it almost makes the renters insurance free. I went to them off of recommendation of a lot of people here.

I have 2 vehicles, STI and a 4runner and I have 30/60/30 and I pay 140 a month which includes renters insurance.

my insurance is redonkulously cheap with wawanesa.

my last car was stolen 3 times, and finally totaled. my parents were victims of a hit and run with their miata. in each case we had nothing but great customer service and healthy payouts.

they only insure people with spotless driving records and have been known to kick you off with too many points.

**** son that's some coverage!

I was happy with the 50/100/50.

You haven't had to deal with a claim though, right?

I'll have to check out wawanesa and esurance as well.

I'd file a complaint against your agent with mercury. He should not have yelled at you guys since he's the one ripping you guys off and see if you can file a complaint on the State insurance boards website and advise others to stay away from him and maybe even Mercury all together. Isn't the Ca req. min coverage 25/50? or is that just the recommended? I'd go with Farmers or Liberty mutual. Liberty mutual automatically gives you a 10% discount for owning a subaru. I'm debating on which company to go with as well, I'll have to call my agent to see if he can get me a better rate with farmers ( i currently have bristol west which is one of their other co's and my rates are pretty good.) Good luck.

15/30/5k is the state minimum requirements for insurance.

We insure a '98 Forester S and an '04 Forester XT with e-surance (100/300/30k). Mind you, I can't attest to the claims part, because we thankfully have never had to file a claim, however our insurance premiums (liability on '98/full coverage on '04) run $92.51/mo.

Your mileage (and rates) may vary due to driving record, but this is our experience. I'm turning 41 in May, and she's turning... - anyway, this might also affect rates.

If you have anyway to get usaa i would recommend this.

for my subaru and the wifes prius

i have 100k/300k bodily injury coverage, 100k property dmg, towing, wage benfits and a bunch of other stuff that is not minimum by any means with full coverage, $250 deductible, for $220 a month and the wife and I are both only 26.

edit: i do have claims as well, one windshield claim, and one claim from bumping into the back of a ford excursion.

my rates went up 6 dollars a month. no complaints here
