Am I missing something here?
If the car was in perfect condition, meaning un-crashed with motor/tranny in running order with 119k on it, it would NOT be worth more then $4,500, and even then that'd be kinda steep and if they were looking for that much the car would have to be CLEAN without great paint, good condition all around and unmodified.
The guy def added an extra zero in there. You can easily buy a used WRX for that much, and I'm not talking about a 10 year old car either, I mean a 2005 or something like that with like 70k miles on it. (I'd say a 2005 WRX in good condition with 70k miles on it would go for around $10,500 or so, especially considering that it's over 5 years old and a few body styles older). For an old RS like that, he's lucky to get $1000 for it in that condition.

If you came to look at my old '01 BRP coupe that basically looked like a new car because I spent the time, money and effort to keep it that way, and told me that it should be sold for less because you saw a high miles, un-maintained newer model for a similar price, I would kindly ask you to leave even though you are much taller than me.

Since I own your old wheels and looked over your old car extensively, I see that we have VERY different ways of maintaining and keeping care of our belongings. I have NO IDEA what you would have to do to a set of wheels to make them look like these. NO IDEA how 3 of the tires look nearly like new and one is bald. This is the ONLY way I can see how you would think that someone's older RS coupe would be so worthless. I am not trying to talk down on you - and since you sold your car for $2500, it seems like you are walking your talk.
For people like myself who are on a first-name basis with Trish and Andrew from Subaruparts.com, it's a little different I guess. Sure, I am stupid or at least not financially smart in the ways that I maintain my vehicles, and that is partially why I still have not yet sold my Mini. But, I don't think it's fair to sell my cars for the same price as someone else's that has never seen any care or maintenance. I am still friends with most of the people that have bought my cars, and I have not heard ONCE of one of those cars stranding someone. I am talking 20+ cars here.. I have had a couple of them come back to me - my '95 Impreza is one of them. When I bought it the first time in '04, I bought all the new maintenance parts for the car since it was obvious that no one else ever had. When I bought it back 45k miles later, it still had ALL of those parts that I installed on it. I paid $7500 for my Mini in 2008 and to-date I have paid $7200 in maintenance and repairs on the car. So, I do not want to sell mine for $8,000 just because there is one on CL for that price that doesn't happen to even run... I used to joke that I would love to buy a car that was maintained by me.
Ya I can understand that. It depends on the swap, of course...WRX vs STI, JDM, age, mileage, and a ton of factors.
Then again, I will be doing my RS/L swap myself. If I could pay to have an RSTI or RSWRX swap done I would probably buy a car with a clean swap already done and BAR'ed.

Most people do not maintain their cars. In fact, I have yet to meet one person who maintains their car at what I would see as an acceptable level of care and attention for the complex machine that a car is. They use these devices every day and then get pissed when they even hickup, or when a mechanic wants to actually get paid for the hours put in. Well, some of my friends who I have come to pick up or helped when their cars break down or sent home in one of my cars because the one they showed up in clearly wouldn't make it are the same people that tease me about all the money that I waste on maintaining my cars. Funny, that.
The best way to put this I think is if you would have finished that bold sentence with "to me" and left it at that. Value is very subjective, and to you, these cars have zero value above an old used car. You have made that point OVER AND OVER AND OVER in fact, I would think it would be safe to say that you never really need to talk about how worthless the '93-'01 Subaru Impreza is and just stop talking about which newer models "you could get" for the price of whatever is being asked for the '93-'01 cars you see. You do this every time this topic comes up. Each time before this, I have searched Craigslist and seen that you are still incorrect. I did not check this time for what it's worth, mostly because this ad is weird and it's not a nice condition RS that is being talked about this time.

Regardless, there is a market, and on average it sets the tone. Doesn't mean someone who's car is imacculate will get more, doesn't mean the beaters will get less. Just means what it is, a market average.
On average, 2.5 RS with 117K miles, decent shape, is indeed not worth over $5. My car in it's current shape is probably only worth $2500.
But it's my car. I've put time and money into it, sweat... 5 different suspensions, and they won't be the last. I've done some stupid things to it, and some pretty awesome things... like throwing rod #2 at an auto-x... white smoke billowing, f1 style motor explosion. It was awesome.
I can't set a price on my car. But others can. You may not want to set a price on yours, but, the market is bigger than all of us, and it really does have a place. Great thing is, you can simply choose not to sell or buy. Supply and Demand will dictate the sale price in the end. If someone wants to spend 10k for the car in the link, someone will. Doesn't make it right, or wrong.
But personally, I feel that modding adds no value. Unless you have something truly trick, and like, so ****ing nice it belongs in magazines, it's probably gonna net market price +- 15%.

Does anybody check Edmunds for a starting point on pricing? http://www.edmunds.com/used/2000/sub...tion=vdpresult
I usually use this as a base for selling or buying my vehicles, but I'm not entirely sure where they get their numbers, because they're usually different (usually lower) than Kelley Blue Book. Either way, it's all academic in this case, because the guy wants to sell it as parts, it looks like, as it's likely got a salvaged title if it was in a bad enough accident.

the 2.5RS current street price is obviously not set in comparison to the newer impreza models. And actually I dont see the prices coming down further down any time soon, if anything they might go slightly up. And thats fine because its price isnt being set as any high mileage 10+ year old used car, its being set by the factors of supply and demand.
Put it this way, a used 1973 Porsche Carrera RS can still sell for as much as a brand new 2010 Porsche Turbo, even though the turbo is far superior the RS in nearly every measurable respect of performance, practicality, reliability, etc.
If I had to choose one I'll take the RS
It was indeed awesome, I was working the corner it blew up on....clink, clink, clink, clank, clank, CLANK, CLANK, CLANK.......BOOOOOOOM! Followed by a James Bond style smokescreen...

Whens the last time you saw a 1995 Toyota Supra Turbo on craigslist for
$8K???

http://www.edmunds.com/used/1995/toy...7/options.html
Or this ones rich, the lightweight one year only 1993 Porsche 911 RS America for $5,300!!!

http://www.edmunds.com/used/1993/por...7/options.html
those sites are good if you're looking for Hondas and Toyotas, but not when your dealing with any car that has any value outside of just being a used car
problem is these sites like Edmunds and KBB go off their own formula for determining a cars value based on how old it is that takes nothing about its actual street value into consideration. case in point,

I hung out with the new owner of my Justy last night and when we came back to the car this was on the windshield...

Thought it was kinda cool. This has happened a lot to me, but only with Celicas, Justys and my old '72 2002.

Well said both of you. Too many words to reply to specifically lol.
As for swapping, it is obviously a labor of love. You do not get very far into a GC swap if you are not dedicated. It will obviously not be worth what you put into it, but very few car projects will.
I reread one of your FS threads Wombat...I did not realize you were doing the swap yourself.
Luckily, I am reusing a bunch of parts that I still have from my WRX. 2.5L complete engine, hubs and axles, 4/2 pots, and I scored a killer deal on a 6 speed from an awesome i-clubber
Already scored an 06 WRX wiring harness/ecu/immobilizer/key that matches my WRX. I will probably end up using Legacy Spec-B axles so I can keep the WRX hubs and axles and brakes while using an r180...or I will just say screw it and run some STI hubs.
Considering getting a JDM MLSD R160, but finding the JDM MLSD axles is a pain and they may be hard to replace.
....but that is for another thread
