Air Conditioning Question

My WRX has 38K miles (serviced at Stevens creek for 30K checkup). The air conditioning went out recently..i.e. it blows air, just not cold air. Is it typical for a car to do this? I would have suspected that at the 30K they would have recharged my ac. Do they still recharge ACs? What are the chances it has a leak? IF so what would it cost to repair?

Thanks in advance, I'm a bit of a dimwitt when it comes to cars.

I have 56k on mine and it still blows cold air. AC recharge is not part of the 30k service. can't tell you about how much it costs.

good luck. FYI- steven creek sucks. I wouldn't trust those guys to put air in my tires.

R12 runs aroun $12 per lb. IIRC. Not sure if thats whats in our subys or not though.
I read a number of complaints that the AC in the impreza sucks. I will agree with this for the most part, my 89 honda civic had colder AC then my 04 WRX does. =(

I have a feeling the dealership will recharge your A/C refrigerant under warranty. The worst they can say is no.

So they said I had coolant and the compressor was working but no cold air is blowing out. They said it was likely a fuse or an electrical problem and that they could diagnose it for $100 an hour. I said no way. Any ideas what it could be?

AC's are closed systems. If functioning properly (i.e. no leaks) then the system will not need to be recharged. If the system is low on refrigerant, there is a leak - if it's not then it sounds like an electrical problem (connections to compressor clutch, fuse, etc.) like they mentioned.

Our cars run r134a. The stuff is cheap, about $6.00 per 12oz, and can be bought at Kragen. You can do it yourself; it's very easy. The only concern is how fast the cold air went away. If it went out over night, you probably have a leak and you will just lose the rechage anyway. If it went away slowly, a recharge will probably work just fine. Here is a link to the stuff at Kragen:

If the system is charged and they said there are no leaks but warm air comes out still is there a simple way for me to fix it? They said the compressor kicks on. I didn't know if there is a simple fuse for me to replace?

P.S. next time I'll refill it on my own.
