Question About FasTrak…

Anybody using it? I am a happy FasTrak owner for about six months already.

I’ve heard that they use FasTraks to record the average speed of cars for specific parts of the free way for traffic reports.

Anybody knows if the law enforcement agencies can track you down with the FasTrak?
(On the FasTrak website, they say that they won’t know who the driver is and blah blah blah… but I wonder….)

I use fastrak.

Its not to see how fast people are going, its to report traffic.

The thing will read your transponder 2 miles away from the toll crossing and it will see how long it took you to get from that point to the toll crossing and they use that data for real time updates of traffic

Law enforments CANNOT use that against you to give you a ticket as that would be considered a speed trap, which is an illegal way of determining speed in the state of CA.

look for that rule to change soon though, they are using the same technology to cite speeders on toll roads back east, I expect its only a matter of time before big brother starts collecting revenue that way here too.

I wouldnt be surprised if they did that, but that may cause a lot of people to ditch fastrak and thats probably something the state doesn't want.

There is a little silver bag that can prevent it being read. Maybe you can put your transponder inside it whenever you don't need to use the FasTrak?

I used to think that they are not going to cite drivers using FasTrak, but who knows? Our government needs money.....

I mean, they can use the FasTrak to figure out what car is speeding or whatever. Then, just pull you over without ever telling you that they used the FasTrak...I am not sure if that'll work... just some random thought...

yup, if u leave it in the bag and pull it out before the toll crossing you will be ok.

They sent out a privacy notice when they first started doing this and they mentioned it in that notice

I'm not sure I believe that 2 mle number. Having developed and used RFID and transponder style tecnologies for years, I've never seen a system that can be read at that distance.....

Do you have a link or anything about that?

EDIT: I think I see what you are saying - that they have a reader 2 miles before the toll location as well, not that they read it 2 miles away....Gotcha.

Interesting use. Nontheless, if anyone has any data on which product they are using for the transponde,r I'd be very interested (most transponder gear, is EXTREMELY hackable).
