About to do a trunk swap.

Do I need a third brake light? I went to the DMV website and tried searching for anything about the third brake light. Can somebody help me out?

If the brake light is there but does not function, that's an infraction and fix-it ticket waiting to happen.

It wont be there. The brake light on the STi is on the trunk, whereas on the WRX and 2.5 its on the back dash.

hmm, after reading some searches, it sounds like it's a federally mandated thing to have one from the factory, apparently no state has it in the law books that you have to leave it on there...I dunno, I want it there, so some jackass in a lifted truck doesn't come plowing into me from behind one day...all cuz I was too lay to install a new one after a wingless trunk install...

Very true. I have no issue with putting one in, I just want to make sure during the time being I don't get hassled by the man.

in short you swap deck lids as well. That gives you the center brake light and you are good to go.

BTW you will not need to tap in to any lines. If you look there is a disconnect plug in your trunk. Look at the center of the deck lid from inside the trunk. You'll see a plug clearly disconnected, the light plugs in there.
