what do you think about Criterio using the PS3 as their reference Blu-Ray player?

How can that be true. Either the receiver understands the digital signal of the strings of 1's and 0's or it doesn't.

There is absolutely no in between. Only analog is affected like that.

The digital receiver never tries to "translate" a possible iffy signal. If it doesn't know what the signal is.. then you get no display. And if it knows what the signal is but its very faint it still provides the same picture that a 100% perfect signal would. Because if it knows the signal is

11001101010101101010101010101001010101010101010101 0
10101010101010100101010101010101010101010100101010 1

if its faint... it doesn't matter it will still know the difference between a 1 and a 0.

This is true no matter what your experience is, sorry but scientific fact is more reliable than someones opinion on what they've experienced.

My buddy runs tests on this stuff all the time and has shown me signal sheets proving that a $3 cable on amazon performed the same as the $120 monster cable from best buy... even when they applied tons of interference to the cable.

someone believed the Monster hype and purchased a $120 cable.

That same person is trying to justify overpaying $117 for a cable.

I don't have much experience with watching BluRay movies on the PS3 but from what I have seen it provides a beautiful picture.

I agree, its an excellent picture.

I just find it funny and pretty sure all the major manufactures are a bit upset that a gaming system is being used as reference equipment for a noted publishing house.

Oh, also I got a 3ft Monster HDMI cable free with my last TV. So, for kicks I decided to swap it back and forth with some random HDMI cable I have, and the picture looks identical to my eyes.

The salesman was going on about something regarding transfer speeds and that higher refresh devices would need a higher quality cable that can transfer faster and that I should really get the monster cable. I said, "For free? Sure, why not."

Total BS on the sales rep.
Like I said my buddy ran serious stress tests and found Monster Gold plated to be identical to some off brand "POS" cable

It's all compressed.

Dish uses Mpeg4 right now and it looks about as good as bluray. I watch it all day long and watch bluray on my ps3. Nearly the same.

Bluray is still on 25gb single layer discs, so it's still compressed. A movie i record form an HD station ends up at about 7-10gb for 2hrs. Looks very very close to bluray version.

The ps3 is a powerhouse. We've seen it conquer 5:3:3:2 and other crazy cadences like it was taking a walk in the park!

If you like anime, ps3 is for you, DVD or bluray. It's the only thing out there for the price that can make such difficult cadences playback smoothly.

As far as I understand that isn't a broadcast though.
VOD you download then watch.

I am talking about when you are watching lets say HD NFL or baseball or basketball.. the live broadcast is something like 480

I would certainly believe it. I wouldn't have bought it, especially not after seeing with my own eyes the difference (or lack thereof).
