Personally, I think they should have done it on Good Friday - when the captain escaped for a moment, I would have had the CIWS trained on that boat and blasted it so hard, there wouldn't have been a piece large enough to pick up with a teaspoon. The pirates couldn't take on the CIWS system, and wouldn't have had time to shoot at the captain - they would have had approximately 300 rounds blasting through the boat (and them)...
4500 rounds per minute - a bit more impressive than the 30 rounds we saw in another video.

They could simply station an LHA off the coast of Somalia, and the problem would be solved. Fire on ANYTHING that remotely looks like a pirate boat coming off the coast, and drop them EVERY TIME they get further than waist deep in the water. CIWS systems to make bait from the bodies, helicopter gunships with rocket launchers to extend the reach of the Navy - a contingent of Marines on board with landing craft in case we need to go inland.
No can do, that would be an act of war. US military ships cannot enter territorial waters without consent from that government. Even outside of territorial waters is hairy unless they have our flag or none. FYI CIWS is outdated and being replaced with something better. Why are you obsessed with this firecontrol system?
The problem isn't about stationing warships in the area though it does deter piracy in the area through show of force. It's the lack of law and law enforcement in the area. The navy can only do so much, the majority of the work is actually on the shoulders of coast guard law enforcement detachments on said boats. Simply put the navy cannot do much unless we engage in war against Somalia, until then the job rests on tiresome boardings from the law enforcement detachments of the multinational coast guards involved in the area. International law is a pain isn't it?

we like the CWIS because it shoots big bullets really fast.
PS1(SW/SCW/AW), I know a little here and there about the weapons system as well, and it may be outdated, but it still kicks *** and is very effective.

Hate to break it to you, but a BLK 1B CIWS (only one out now that shoots surface targets) does not shoot that fast at surface targets. The surface rate is significantly reduced, no need to shoot that fast at a target that is that slow and close enough to see. Also it would just sink the boat, not make it break into pieces, but what do I know I just work with the weapon system every day. The rate of fire is cool when it fires, as when you're about 20 ft away from it or less it'll make your entire body vibrate even in your spine. I've actually gotten to the point where I hate shooting the thing though, it's just too much work before and after for such a quick event.
up load + down load + pre fires + post fires = an entire work day (if you're lucky)
CIWS is meant as a last resort for inbound missile attack. It fires too damn fast and requires too much maintainable to be used as a conventional offensive weapon.

"We were mourning for dead friends and then roaring planes came -- grief upon grief. America has become our new enemy."
"From now on, if we capture foreign ships and their respective countries try to attack us, we will kill them (the hostages)," Jamac Habeb, a 30-year-old pirate, told The Associated Press from one of Somalia's piracy hubs, Eyl. "(U.S. forces have) become our No. 1 enemy."
