Based on what we knew about the engine design... I'm not surprised at all. I've been saying the 2.0 DIT should be as strong or stronger down low than the 2.5 for quite some time.

It's not just DI that does that. DI enables the higher CR, but it's also rod:stroke ratio, it's twinscroll, and therefore must have EL headers, it's low-mount so much less volume in the runners, it's the way the heads have changed for the better, it's the whole package.

The WRX turbo is probably a similar size to the STi vf. My current bet is that they're gimping the WRX so the STi retains an advantage in "magazine racing" numbers. If the turbo is smaller I'm willing to bet it's not that much smaller, and we'll see the equivalent of "stage 2" 2015+ WRX being no worse than 10-15 HP lower than the STi "stage 2". Area under the torque curve is certain to be better with an aftermarket tuned WRX, even if HP is lower. Just a matter of time for the aftermarket tuning options to become available.

The design of the new engine really is better in almost every aspect. It shouldn't be all that surprising given the root of the current EJ design is getting close to 30 years old now.

The new engine will definitely be a major improvement. That said, I'm still very happy with my 14' WRX purchase.

In a couple years, when the bugs are worked out and perhaps improvements are made, I'll definitely be picking up an STI.

Waiting to see that wrx motor in the future STi. ..maybe this is a test run on that motor in terms of thre wrx being the "geneau pig" (mispelled i know lol) in the enthusiast market so that someone can experiment. Who knows what someone out there may do. Transplant that new engine in an sti model n take notes. Lol.

I think you arent giving Subaru's R&D the benefit of the doubt.

I mean i am. But its hard to ignore the fact that major leaps and bounds have yet to take place on the sti lineup. Fact that it still sports the traditional motor shows. Dont fix whats not broken i get...but almost 30 years now. Really. Lol.

Subaru has always been a super small manufacturer. That means that they are very conservative, especially being Japanese. They only just recently started having major success in the last couple years, ill say we will probably see major improvements in the next decade since I think the true concept to production of a car is around 5 years.
