What kind of dyno? Also, what state were they in (wondering what octane gas they used)?

The only difference is the stitching on the steering wheel and seats.

Sounds like a very, very high reading dyno. Don't expect those numbers in the bay area... we have 'heart breakers'

I have a 2009 wrx now and I can tell you there is quite a difference from my old 2002. for whatever it is worth. although not 285 to the wheels difference.

That's bullcrap, dude.

I've driven a 2009 wrx and it's very obviously slower than an STI. 285whp even on a dynojet is not believable unless the correction factor was way stupid.

i'm not exactly the most mechanically savvy guy around, so can anyone tell me how it's possible to get more power at the wheels than at the crank?

You don't, unless the manufacturer is grossly underrating the car in advertisements.

Dyno #'s are always kind of fishy though. They are so easy to adjust and have so much disparity between them that the numbers are really meaningless unless you can get stock baselines from a bunch of different cars on that dyno
