2009 Gears into a 2002 transmission

I heard this is possible but haven't heard anything about it since the initial conversation.

I have a Built EJ257 in my 2002 WRX. I am at the maximum recommended WHP for the 5 SP. My synchro's are toast and I need to rebuild. I'm trying to find an alternative to the 6 Speed swap. I'm entertaining options about making the 5 speed stronger. I also read it is the transmission case which is the weak spot due to flexion under load. Doesn't seem like much you can do to get away from that issue.

Questions are....

1. Is it true that the gears are stronger in 2009 wrx?
2. Is it true that the 2009 wrx gears are better than 2002 RA gears?
3. Is it possible to put the 2009 Gears into the 2002 Transmission.

If so...

4. Can anyone provide details on all that is needed as far as parts.
5. Why this is not a good idea.

To the Shops in the bay who work on transmissions..
6. How much money to do this?
7. How long would it take?

Thanks,
J

These are the questions you should be asking the people who know best.

Hit up Mike at GST or Noah at LIC. They'll break down your options and include accurate prices. Both very trustworthy shops. I've never tried Ed at EQ but he has a lot of happy customers too. Lots of great options.

Yeah I got ya.. I just wanted to open it up to the forum for a bit of help so when i approach a mechanic, I give them relevant information without wasting time. I'm also curious if anyone out there has done this to their car and what the overall results are.
Thanks,
J

I've heard that people run legacy gears which are stronger than stock wrx gears. Woodward on here had them on his 07 wrx.

Subaru 5 speeds suck. The split case is weak and even if you can get gears with larger cut teeth like on the RAs you cant physically make the gears wider or larger so your always going to be limited there with the 5 speed.

And if you want a second opinion, just ask Mike at GST why they switched from a 5 speed dog that was advertised as bullet proof and cost an arm and a leg back to a stock subaru six-speed in their time attack car

to locate and have a shop install a 6 speed with all needed parts = 6 grand.

I am trying to do this without spending that much. I know its almost impossible but wanted to check out the possibilities.

Hey, john....If you called and left a msg, I'm sorry for not returning it!
The newer gearset should be looked at as just another option.
As others can attest, the five speed does have its weaknesses that can only be remedied by using a different transmission.

That is usually cost prohibitive for most folks; 6 spd swaps are at least twice the cost of rebuilding a 5spd.
RA gears are nice, but can be difficult to get, no kit is 100% complete, engine revs are higher, etc. And, RAs do fail.

John...pm me your number and ill call you when its convenient for you.
BTW, most transmission rebuilds are one day jobs, as we have cores ready to go.

jeez really? damn I forgot about the rear end/driveshaft, I was just figuring the 3K for a used trans, I guess if you find a 06-07 your good with the stock rear end correct? well thats a toss up, would depend on how much you can get the gears/rebuild for. This is important for me since Im planning a swap into my RS, though since I need a motor too it would be worth it for me to find a totaled 04-05 for around 10K and just gut it. Damn I shouldnt have sold my STi
