Are 2.5RS's AWD?

I was on my lunch break walk in Sunnyvale earlier today. Coming up Wolfe near the Lowe's I heard this loud clunk, looked up and saw a tow truck towing a car with the rear raised up (front tires on the ground).
Anyhoo, he had to pull into the fire station at the corner. As I walked passed, I saw that the car was a 2.5RS. Following behind the car was a pretty gnarly smell of noxious chemicals.

I'm pretty new to Subies, but I thought the 2.5RS was AWD. If so, I think that car is pretty jacked now (more so than the reason it needed to be towed in the first place). If that is anybodys car here, let me know and I'll definitely testify on your behalf.

It is AWD. If it is an automatic transmission, you can turn it to FWD by putting a fuse into the one labeled FWD. As I understand it, you do that when you run the spare, and (maybe) get towed. Just to be safe, Subaru's should be flatbedded.

I had to do the FWD thing last year at Hammy when I got a flat.

but according to the OP... the suby getting towed was being towed with its front wheels on the ground. so even if you did put it in FWD mode, shouldn't that mean the suby must be towed with its rear wheels on the ground not front? correct me if i'm wrong...

Not sure. I would check my manual, but I am in Davis at the moment, and my car is in Fremont.

they have a book. I used to have a Dodge Stealth ES (the FWD version, the turbo'd ones were AWD) but the guy wanted to make sure it was the FWD version before towing it so he looked it up in his book. The problem isn't that people don't know what they are doing, they just don't care about what they're doing.

Yup, they are AWD. Unless the car you saw was actually a FWD L. Even in that case, the owner got screwed by the tow truck

Well I'm pretty sure I saw it with the front wheels down.

The sound of the clunk and the really bad trail of stench the car left behind couldn't be a good indication of what was going on either.

I wish the best of luck to the owner.

All Subarus since 1997 have been AWD. That includes the RSs from '98 to '01.
