Is just a bunch of BS then? That would be sweet.
Yes, it is BS

this has been discussed ad nauseum over on nabisco, the JDMs were forged up till V7s, the V8s are all now HyperE.

Ah OK, so they have downgraded the JDM/International as well then? Interesting.

Is there any real problem with the HyperE pistons?

Interesting, hope APS changes that info then. I have a lot of respect for their products.

Thanks for the info.

Choku Dori is kinda right... but it's also true that in Japan, there are cutoffs for displacement levels for registration. See here:

http://www.tax.metro.tokyo.jp/car_event/#j_7

So in Tokyo, to register a 1.5-2.0L car is about $60 per year cheaper than a 2.0-2.5L car.

There are also weight taxes and the insurance is further based on the displacement...but yeah, that's why they make a 2.0L and a 2.5L but not a 2.1L...

Personally, being the decrepit old schooler, I think Subaru is headed the wrong direction. Bigger and heavier is not the way to win against the domestic brands ... lighter, cheaper, and more nimble is... Gas mileage is going to suck on a 2.5 compared to a 2.0 with the same technologies applied...

2.0 and 2.5 motors are the same size and weight, only bore/stroke have changed. If your worried that much about gas theres always honda civics

HyperE are alot more practical choice for pistons from a car makers perspective. Forged need to heat and expand so are noisy when cold and polute more on cold start than Hypers. Also Hypers are more long term reliable when used at their designed operational range than a comparable forged at at the same levels, though when pushed past forged can handle more stress, its like a scalpel versus a steak knife, the scalpel will be sharper but the steak knife is tougher

"Because it's cheaper to produce" was exactly the answer I was expecting. Thanks.
