Glocks are like the AK's of the handgun world. I'd like to see you do this with a 1911...

Like I need to say it again, give it a good cleaning, check for barrel obstructions and functionality. Guns that have been stored properly, or have never been fired, do not usually become unsafe to fire.

Generation one if it is that old. Generation two wasn't until early 2000's. I have a gen 1 G23 I bought in 2002 and a gen 2 G27 I bought in 2010.

As others have said , get the manual for it, disassemble and perform proper maintenance/lubrication and it should be fine. If you are REALLY unsure, take it to a gun shop and have them do it.

If you aren't familiar with firearms, some shops offer the Handgun Safety Course which covers the basics and most importantly: safety. You WILL need to get it registered if you take it to a shop though, even though it was literally "grandfathered" to you.

I'm going to the range tonight with a group of friends

Your timeline is quite a bit off. Gen 2's were introduced around 1988. And Gen 3's came out right before 2000.

The OP should post a pic of his G17.

Hell I got a Mosin Nagant thats probably older than my grandparents and still works as good as it did in WW2, Im half tempted to post this thread over on the forum to see the reaction they would have to someone worried about firing a glock thats not even old enough to buy beer

I have a G17 that has had thousands of rounds put through it and I've cleaned it exactly... never. It gets lubed up when I think it should be but other than that I do nada to it. It's a ***** in so many ways. I doubt you'll have a problem with yours. Field strip it and lube up and you'll be good to go.
