Gotta check how old they are. Even with tons of tread, after 2-3 years, they're junk. The rubber won't stay soft enough in cold weather for them to function properly.

Are you sure thats true? Doesn't that depend on how they have been stored/ temperature changes they have seen.

I can't understand if a car is parked in the mountains and not driven how that could happen to the tires

^ thats more accurate. even though it does play a part in "half life", shelf life alone cannot determine the quality of a slightly used tire.

If properly stored, they can last quite a while.

You're right, it's more about how they're stored and how many heat cycles they go through. But even if the car's not driven, unless it's being stored under air conditioned temps, a garage is still going to get pretty hot in the summer esp in the mountains.
