If it's just an oil change do it yourself, unless you have free oil changes at the dealership (Plans for oil changes are usually offerd when you buy a car, they cost money but it's factored into the deal). What kind of checks do they do?

Look in the manual for a list of items that they check.

I don't have a manual. I don't have a Subaru either. I'm a filthy troll who drives a VW, but has asperations of driving a WRX as soon as I find a job.

99 GTi GLX. VR6 engine. It's a piece, and as soon as I can unload it, I'll be in a Subaru. The WRX is only for now.

Hey Roger, here's the list of what you're suppose to do for the 15K service. It's mostly a lot of inspection and the only thing you really have to change is the oil and filter:

Inspect Brake lines, hoses & connections
Inspect Brake system
Inspect CV joints
Inspect Clutch
Inspect boots & seals Drive axles
Change Engine oil
Inspect/replace Manual transmission fluid
Replace Oil filter
Inspect/adjust Parking brake
Inspect/replace Rear differential fluid
Inspect Steering & suspension
Inspect/rotate Wheels & tires

Do yourself a favor and just do the oil change. Save your money for the 30K service. That's when you'll have to replace most of the fluids in your car.

Those Vortex guys couldn't swing you over to buy a 1.8T?

Don't get me started on the Vortex. Plus, I got a great deal on my car and I couldn't find a 1.8t for near what I paid for my GTi two years ago. Besides, the VR6 has such a sweet exhaust sound when you don't run any mufflers.

EDIT: My apologies for hijacking this thread, Change your own oil, and look for loose hoses and cables under the car. Thats some serious money from the dealer to do all that. There going to say you need most of this done and that done, and it's going to take at least two hours at what-ever they charge for labor. If I had to guess, maybe $100-200.
