'06 WRX has 6500 rpm redline.... hmmm why?
Swung by the dealership to check out the '06 WRX. Pretty sweet. Leather interior and stuff now. 17" wheels. Factory 4-pots up front and 2 pots in the rear (although I hate those old, fixed, iron brakes. The '05 LGT brakes are much better in every possible way...seriously).
2.5 liter. Interesting to see the Forester XT intercooler (short top-to-bottom but wider than WRX with a plastic end tank) on there and an electronic throttle body.
REALLY weird to see a 6500 rpm redline!!!!!!! WTF?!?!?!?!
It really worries me that it is as such because of a change to the internals or the heads, rather than simply a tuning thing. It makes sense to me that Subaru might have chosen to put cast internals or a weaker valvetrain on there to make sure there was a differentiation worth $10,000 between the WRX and the STI... otherwise with 4 pot brakes, 17" wheels, upgraded suspension, stronger tranny, and identical 2.5L to the STI it wouldn't make sense for a lot of people to spend that extra $10k when they're going to be replacing the turbo/intercooler/injectors anyway and can just build an STI from the now-beefed-up WRX....
...but it's all speculation from me.... Anybody hear anything semi-concrete?!?!?

...and some pics just cuz...

Ooooh leather, + heated, + sunroof also...

6500 what?

Of course the other possibility is that it's still the same engine but the TD04 runs out of breath so incredibly badly up top [and the peak HP comes sooner] on the 2.5 that Subaru lowered the redline just to keep the powerband appropriate.....

Yeah, they're all 6500.
Okay, maybe I posted this thread a bit prematurely. I did a bit of research and it turns out that the FXT has always had a redline [as painted on the gauge] of 6500 rpm. Apparently so does the LGT.
My final decision is that it's simply tuned like that because the smaller turbo cannot maintain the same kind of top end on the 25% larger engine with higher compression than the EJ20.
It has been essentially confirmed that the FXT and LGT turbo engines are identical to the STI's engine. The rumors have it that the new WRX gets the FXT engine and beefed up (dual cone synchros on 1st, stronger case, better ratios) transmission. I belive this considering the FXT intercooler is in the WRX now for no apparent other reason.
So there ya go, I think it's just tuning-related

that looks like an automatic, at least from the gauge cluster, maybe thats why there is a 6500 redline?
What's the forestor XT's redline?

Nah it's rated at higher. 230 I think? It's really the torque that has jumped up a whole bunch. The car's definitely going to be faster than the 2.0....

Is that true for turbo cars? Since usually the turbo tapers off before red so peak power and torque is before redline...
though, the point is true to keep insurance rates down on the car and make it more appealing that way a lot of companies do that...
