That whole thing last night has nothing to do with awareness and cultural acceptance. It has to do with money. Specifically marketing to a certain demographic. So if you want to be upset, be upset at those companies for trying to make money by courting a non-english demographic. Personally it was so damn short that most of my household missed it.

i think everyone has forgotten that this country once belonged to other people that aren't white. (ill let you guys figure it out). sorry... this is just a whole other debate....

point is, who cares is someone speaks another language. well, maybe the only time to care is when they force you to learn it, like a secondary language class in high school. but at least those classes give you memory practice and other useful skills.

I think the point was this...

The NFL is an american institution. Football that's not round and black and white is an american institution. The channel is an american channel. The broadcast was in america. The United States of America as a whole is suppose to have an official language of English. We're too PC these days to say so.

So... in short. American sport, american channel should equal english broadcasting. I have no desire to listen to spanish or celebrate spanish heritage while watching my american sport.

Not that I don't respect it... it's just not my responsibility to do so. You don't see ANY other country in the ENTIRE world doing what we do. You go to germany you better learn german, france french, china chinese, etc. You don't see china celebrating american independence day like we celebrate may 5th. I can't go to north korea, get a traffic ticket and say... no speaky korean. Now pay for my education and healthcare.

You want to celebrate that **** go to mexico.

sorry. PC or not I don't give a ****. This is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Speak some ****ing english. I shouldn't have to know spanish to get a job. I shouldn't have to know spanish to watch american tv. I shouldn't have to know spanish to order a burger at carls jr. PERIOD.

Damn well know I'd learn enough of the language to get by if I was moving to a country and make it a point to get fluent in it quickly. Sure I wouldn't forget my american heritage but I wouldn't expect someone in zimbabwe to celebrate for me.

It wasn't about celebrating Mexican heritage/culture. I'm telling you it was about making money. Yeah, the NFL is an American institution, but you think they don't want to make money off of people that aren't American or don't speak English. The NFL wants what every profitable business wants & that's to make money off of people. To get all upset thinking that ESPN, NFL & all of them care if you are culturally aware or that they are PC. BS, they just want to tap into that money.
Oh yeah and May 5th isn't Mexican Independance day, just as an FYI.

While I agree with you that we shouldn't know spanish so we can order fast food or any other daily activity, America is and always will be a mixing pot. America has NO heritage, no culture. Every place that you listed has a much longer history and culture. This country was built when travel was becoming accessible to people, not just a naval fleet. This country was built by immigrants (or I could say non-english speakers also), such as the Chinese building the transcontinental railroad, or the Asians who were in the sugar fields in Hawaii.

America does not have an official language, and if you think it will ever have one, wake up. The world is getting smaller everyday, as transportation becomes even easier as technology is quickly advancing. While you shouldn't be required to know spanish to get a job in America, being bilingual, trilingual, etc is going to be a major advantage in getting a job, especially spanish in America.

However, just like public transportation, it's going to keep going in the current direction and not change. America encourages mixing cultures, just like they encourage driving your own car, that should be better than your neighbor's.

Actually, in Deutschland, your first language is going to be taught at home (German mostly), then once you reach Primary schooling - everyone learns English as a second language, then depending upon your geographical location you will learn up to a third language (ie. if you are in East Germany you are probably going to learn Russian, West Germans learn French etc.)

So, there are countries that encourage or even require language learning - however, it is normally in the early stages of child development (after that your brain stops trying to learn languages).

I know if you want to live in Canada you have to speak either English or French and if you don't, they will pay for you to learn it.

But back to the topic at hand, yes our 'official language' in California and the USA is supposed to be English, but I do not foresee it being the standard...ever.

The Spanish Heritage Month for the NFL is them trying to get more Hispanics to come to games and spend money - its not a PC/Tolerance issue - its money.

And now for something completely different...

its an unfortunate flaw in our education system and our society in general that we don't all speak more languages but its not often I take a train that takes me through 4 countries that speak 5 languages.

I'm not a moron for **** sakes. I know a few folks from european countries and all of them speak 3 languages and a couple as many as 5. Friend of mine teaches linguistics for the army in monterey. Both my brothers in laws are studying farci.

If the NFL wants to expand then partner with telamundo and do a spanish broadcast. Don't force me to listen/watch it.

I think its nuts that we force people to take english until 12th grade then some more in college but you only have to take 2 years of a foreign language that won't do you any good. In my opinion you should know your abc's by the time you are in highschool and be "encouraged" to take languages all 4 years of high school and offer it in 7-8th as electives.

Our education system is a joke.

so.... yeah.

Would you say... in germany not be allowed to be a police officer if you didn't speak say french?

That's my point. Its gotten to the point where we catter so much to the minority that the rest goes to **** until said minority becomes majority. Sorry but I'm all for tighter restrictions on getting in to this country and bilking the welfare state.

Its called marketing. ESPN sees the opportunity to market the NFL to a large Spanish speaking demographic and they took advantage of it. Its 100% American to make money and thats what ESPN is trying to do. This isnt an entire broadcast in Spanish, it was 30 seconds and 4 commercials. Get over yourself, it has nothing to do with getting a job or ordering a burger. This is America, where at one point or another everyone was an immigrant.

Ive never seen someone get so butthurt over having to watch, during a timeout mind you, 30 seconds of a spanish SAP broadcast of a program on American television.
