ive always wondered about the higher gear so you can cruise at lower RPMS, and my guess is that if you go higher in gear with lower RPM, the car won't have enough power to keep the car at cruise. It takes a certain amount of energy to have the car at a certain RPM to cruise. I don't understand the powerband concept but it probably won't have enough to let you cruise at 80 mph (with drag and friction and all that jazz). Just a guess.
