Could be legit. I remember this year having a problem of hemorrhaging oil.

probably blown ring or something if it's eating oil. If you can find a motor, might be supa cheap.

Doubt it. I'd lean more towards rear separator plate, rear main seal, every front seal, etc all leaking oil. Pretty common, really. Fairly cheap fix. Cheapish. Relatively cheap.

Anyone care to venture a guess about the likelihood that the timing belt hasn't been done?

You've now successfully doubled the cost of the vehicle.

T-belt + parts + every oil seal + oil separator cover + smog on 11 y.o. car > $1100.00

I'd venture to guess the head gaskets aren't in the best shape either.

Yeah, Rather pay like 5x that for something newer, less miles or where you know for sure what shape it's in.
