What block to use for a EJ25 Turbo?
Well, I dont have the car yet but I am already plotting it...
SO heres my question: What short block would all of you suggest using on a EJ25 with a Forced air Tech. Stage III turbo kit? I was thinking EJ22 becasue it is a closed deck but would that work with the ej25 set up? What about an STi shortblock? I'm sorry, i'm sort of new to this so any help would be apprecieated.

the EJ22-T and the STi are both closed deck blocks and have/include forged internals so they can handle plenty of power. I would say it's just a matter of preference. The EJ22-t is supposedly the strongest block made by Subaru- maybe because the piston walls are thicker...
I think they're pretty much the same price for a short block at subaruwrxparts.com with a full engine gasket kit option too.
I say go 2.2 to be unique and also you might still have somewhat reasonable gas mileage when compared to a fully blown 2.5 turbo with big a$$ injectors (which are needed for that kind of displacement).
my .02

The STi block isn't fully closed, its only semi-closed. The ej22-t shortblock is fully closed and can hold rediculious amount of boost without any major modifications (I've heard 30, but I'm not sure on the exact number).
And, if you really want to, there are some ej22-t shortblocks that are bored and stroked out to displace 2.4L (with a fully closed deck). Yum Yum.

the reason that the 2.2 holds boost so well is because the CR is 7.7-1 compared to the WRX which is 8.2-1
but i have heard storys of stock 2.2 with 200K miles runing high boost(30psi) with revs of 8k rpm and only spining a bearing
but for the money a stroked 2.2 would give the best durability because you would get forged pistons, rods and crank because the pistons and maybe rods(still in debate) are not forged

i think your WRX heads should bolt up because turbo heads fit on turbo short blocks better than turbo heads fit on NA block or is it NA heads fiting to turbo block
if you can get a cheap stroker kit you can make big power and still have reliability

wasn't the 22B a stroked 2.2? That's a rare breed of monster, and u could go that route, but then again, why not just use the 2.5 that is coming with the car? If you're planning on stage III, then strengthen the internals and you can avoid the swapout as long as you don't goo n00b with the boost at first.

In order to get the EJ257 to fit, you need to cut the waterjacket sine there is a crankvent in the way.

A few Subaru SandRail shops take the EJ22 and over bore it for 2.5L
The best of both worlds.
they also throw in Cast iron sleeving...
above a certain boost limit you start to get combustion inside the sleeves with an aluminum and aluminum setup

i'm running a legacy turbo ej22 closed deck short block with 2000 phase II heads and a ludespeed stage 1 turbo kit and blitz fmic in my 2000 RS. the STi block has some minor issues with waterjackets and the RS heads so yes rallysportz is wrong about that, and i also will confirm that the STi short block is not forged internals like the ej22 turbo block. subaru used some new casting and high pressure hardening techniques so it is very strong but not, in my opinion, as strong or proven as the ej22.
i'm going to recommend that you make sure that u research THOROUGHLY the forced air tech stage 3. that system may not be anywhere close to the efficiency map for the RS heads. every turbo has an efficiency map and u base it's ability to work properly in your setup by your engine's overall flow. u can get a good idea based on just head and intake manifold flow but if your turbo ends up being way out of its efficiency range u'll b laggy as hell and may not make much power or make power for a very short rev range. just something to think about for a big investment like this.
also you may want to think about searching for parts from ludespeed kits and stock wrx parts to begin with. the FAT kits come with an rrfpr (rising rate fuel pressure refulator) a piece of crap for a system that can push as much boost as an ej22 hybrid engine wants to run. it has a piggyback ingnition management computer which is probably a j&s or something similar. not a great way to go. i can tell you as a witness to it that an ej22 hybrid engine (basically the setup yur talking about) will run like crap with the stock rs ecu and a rrfpr and piggyback ignition.
now as far as price, yur gona look at around 1300-1400 for the STi shortblock and 1400-1500 for the 2.2L turbo short block. make sure if u go with this you don't confuse it with the N/A 2.2L, u'll b kicking yurself forever.
one other thing, the RS heads work fine on the legacy turbo blocks. the only thing is when u start getting into high end standalone tuning, big injectors, big turbos, etc. the RS heads hav a ridge on them that doesn't match up with the legacy block exactly. u start to interupt flame promulgation and flow a little bit and i needs to be machined off. but thats far in the distance for u.
well i think thats it. i'm not on this forum much, no offense i just enjoy nasioc much more. so if u hav any questions or anything u can contact me or hitokiri on nasioc (same handle as here). and i duno where yur located but we've pulled 3 engines this summer so far, my engine install, his engine pulled for his clutch, turbo kit, oil pan, etc., and we installed a stock phase II rs engine into a 2002 to go back to stock. so if u need help with the install and wana make the drive from where ever u r, feel free to ask us for some help. we're in north eastern Mass. goodluck dude, and DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!
