Lots of people use this turbo, mostly on STis though. Spool up isn't so great, but it's got tons of top end on a WRX.

with the Sti and the FP green ... what downpipe would be the best choice? Would a highflow catted dp be wise?

www.deadboltspeed.com has some really nice turbo services. they can port and polish a vf-34 or vf 39 with their Monsterport technology. you can also get it ceramic coated to prevent heat soak. check out their site it has a lot of good information. if port and polish a vf-34 or vf 39 and ceramic coated it will spool up alot faster and have more power than a stock vf34 & vf 39

I have a Deadbolt vf 34 with monster port, ceramic coat and black extreme coat on the exhaust side and that is with Cobb's vf 34 map. The car runs strong, good power and spools very quick

Cant wait to get a tune with a Pro Tuner, then it will be really sweet!!!

Does porting and coating make that much of a difference for the turbo. I have a vf39 and I'm thinking about doing that. Is it worth the money?

If you have boost creep yes. If you don't... it depends who you ask, and whether or not they sell PnP or paid for it.

On an STi the Green has many of the same characteristics of the stock turbo but slightly later spool and a bunch more top end power. I'd personally go with something smaller on a WRX unless you have an 06.

I completely agree - well stated. Also, the FP Red would be a good choice for the STI. Pdx Tuning and Matrix Integrated have been using them with huge success. If you compare the hp and wheel curves between STIs with the Green and the Red, there is very little spool up difference but you can get more power with less boost pressure and it will allow you to continue into the 400 whp range if you decide to invest the $$$ to rebuild the block to run higher boost and tighter compression ratio.
