Deadbolt
Is it worth it to have them modify the stock turbo? What kind of gains am i looking at? What else would i have to do along with this mod if anything?

yes, its worth it. i have a deadolt ported TD04, and it spools up much better than stock. you're not going to see much of an improvement in peak horsepower, but you'll have a much, much wider and more useable powerband.
you don't need anything but the turbo and new gaskets if you're going to install a deadbolt turbo. it will run with the stock ECU and injectors. to get the most out of it, you can use STi injectors along with an ECU reflash.

i am also looking into doing a deadbolt port and polish and i have heard nothing but good remarks from people that have had it done....but first i gotta get some ss lines and some carbotech pads
Not trying to jack your thread Wikced but I was thinking the same thing. I've noticed that Deadbolt can port only certain parts of the turbo if you request (which is also cheaper). But if I go with a Monster port job is it at all similiar to getting a VF34?

no, a monster ported TD04 isn't similar to getting a VF34. the TD04 is never going to be able to force the same ammount of air into the engine that the VF34 is. a ported TDO4 won't run those sorts of boost pressures, it simply isn't big enough to flow enough air. this is one of those cases where you get what you pay for -- $200 for a port and polish vs. an $800 turbo.
if you ever come to the BDG meet on thursdays, i'll take you for a ride if you'd like. the main benefit of the porting is the decrease in turbo lag and where boost comes on in the powerband.

I know a Monster P&P is also supposed to eliminate boost creep (porting the wastegate). I just sent my VF23 to Deadbolt for the Monster P&P and ceramic coating. Hmm... I bet the VF23 will be kicking some mean ****.
Dropkick, I still need to go for a ride in your car.

yeah, the VF23 should be a beast once it gets back from Deadbolt. it'll spool faster than stock, and hit a hell of a lot harder. maybe we ca work out a ride next thursday.
I'd go with a VF34, if you want high boost levels and more power. However, if you are a more reserved driver who isn't looking at the "drag" aspect, the deadbolt is the sure way to go.

a more reserved driver? deadbolt turbos are great for road, street and track drivers who don't want or need the powerband of a drag biased turbo. i'd hardly call a turbo that makes a great backroad powerband for reserved drivers.
muppet is right. HAving the stock turbo ported is great for reducing lag. Its also a good idea if you want to run a front mount intercooler becuase the quicker spool should eliminate the lag caused by the lengthy intercooler piping.

you really don't need a FMIC with any sort of modified stock turbo. an STi top mount is more than enough cooling on all but the hottest days. you'd be better off just going with an STi top mount and water spray for the hot days, and saving $500 or so.

Ported & Polished w/Ceramic coating VF23
I feel like resurrecting this thread...
I wonder if Jerry at Deadbolt has any benchflow or dyno results of before and after the turbo is reworked. It would be cool if this information was available for all other turbos he works on.
Thoughts?
Oh, and this is going in tomorrow, and Shiv will be tuning my car Monday...

Dang, this VF23 has some awesome midrange power and torque... still not boosting max yet. Hopefully, this afternoon Shiv will do his mojo on the car and then it will really kick.
