i just downloaded the DOLPHIN HD browser for my android 2.2 phone.

it allows me to change the user agent string. (the UA string tells the web server what kind of a browser you are using and it can do things like change how the page is delivered).

anyways, if i keep it as ANDROID, it shows the crappy looking mobile view.

i change it to iPhone or Desktop, it shows up fine. change back to Android and it goes back to mobile.

so i guess deep down in the setting for this website, VBulletin has a setting for Android browsers to switch to mobile view, no matter what...

go try it for self. DOLPHIN HD browser is free.

I have a htc evo. but I'm actually running a Cyanogen mod rom 6.1.2
I've changed my ua string to desktop and it doesn't ever revert back to android. Works flawlessly.

personally, i dont want a separate app.

why? constantly needing to update. ok. on android, you have the option to auto update apps. when i had my iphone, that wasnt an option.

web based access is still better. you update once and it's automatic for everyone.

with a standalone app, it still accesses the same data as if viewing through the a web browser. if the server dies, doesnt matter if going through the web or an app.

plus everyone knows the web interface already. no need to learn another.

at this point, what would be the advantage of a standalone app?

The display framework is already on the phone and doesn't need to be downloaded with each page. I've found that apps that display already available web content load faster through an app than the page. I have the unlimited data plan for my iPhone so I don't worry about data size, only speed. Newer iPhone users would benefit from presumably smaller amounts of data being downloaded.

Supposedly you can also insert an image from the iPhone. I could not find this feature on the mobile site.
Ability to upload images directly from Android and iPhone!:

That beats the hell out of having to email to photobucket and then copying the link into a thread.

Unfortunately InternetBrands sat with their heads up their asses for too long though, and there is no longer a free iPhone or Android version.

being able to upload via the web on a mobile platform is based on the fact that the programmer knows what they are doing...

it takes like 10 lines of code (in PHP) to be able to present a user a form which can allow it to upload.

NOW, and this is a big one, i dont know in web SDK for iOs allows access to the camera storage location. when i stopped looking at it about a year or so so ago, this wasnt possible. i do know that accessing the gps via the web is now possible. so i dont know how much is allowed these days.

on the android, which allows you to access the SD card like on a normal desktop, it's almost trivial...

Are you talking about a site through Safari not being able to access the pictures? Isn't that a point in support of the forum app?
