I just wanted to see who here has an aftermarket head unit, but is still using the factory speakers..
how do the factory speakers sound with an aftermarket deck?
Does sound quality increase in the factory speakers with JUST an aftermarket head unit??

Thanks,
Zoeb

my subs are hard core overkill over my factory speakers right now and its terrible...i guess im gonna have to run an amp to a kenwood component system...atleast my birthdays comin up...hopefully i can talk to my parents about some components!

Even if you have a $1,000 but it runs to crap speakers they will sound like crap. The good news is with an aftermarket Headunit you can tune the crap music to sound better... i cant wait to install my aftermarket speakers

yah, very true. too bad there's no room to put in rear speakers
on the rear deck. at least that way we couldve gotten better
bass response than those tiny door enclosures.

yeah that sucks!

as a rule, when anyone asks for my advice, i tell them to go in this order:
1) headunit
2) speakers (not subs)
3) amp for speakers*
4) sub/s and amp for sub/s

* this varies as some headunits put out plenty enough power to run the speakers without needing an amp

just my dos pesos though:)

yah, i got a kenwood component 6.5's coming in in a few hours. :D
will install tomorrow as today, im working on my other car to install a new alpine unit. did some rear speaker work last
night...dropped in some polkaudio's. the fronts are Q's. :D

im thinking about getting a small bass tube to wire up...not
sure yet though, but want to do eveything at once so that
i dont have to pull out the HU again just for the sub, if you
know wat i mean.

why dont you run the RCA's and Remote down while you have the head unit out and then when you are ready for your sub you just have to plug and play....

yah, i was thinking about doing that, but the Polks that i got for the car (98 prelude) has a lot of bass response so i think im going without a sub for now. i like to try to keep my cars as lightweight
as possible. :p the install went real well..those new alpines are
pretty cool. :D

time to work on the kenwood speakers on my wrx today. :p

hey, the kenwoods dropped right into the factory premium
sound kit spacer. :D since the xover has a dial to tune the
tweeter, i put the xover in the previously useless mapholder. :p
i fiddled around with the controls, but with the fader set at
-1, the rear speakers's highs (factory premium kit)and the kenwood's high's mix very well... but yah, the factory sub
needs to go. not enough punch.

i did more sound comparisons with my other car's stereo and
ended up buying a new Alpine HU today. hahaha. :D

any recommendations on the installation kits? iwant to get
one that has a lid on the front din pocket
where can i get one of those?

thanx,
Ken

I called many places trying to get one with a pocket, but I ended up just going to best buy and getting the normal kind...it seems as if no one around here has the flip type kits...I had to actually end up buying a universal mounting kit...I just put my kenwood deck in last night and It made even the stock speakers sound a lot better...THE FACTORY DECK SUCKS!!!

I did like the idea of having an in-dash changer though...but I have an MP3 deck so i can have more songs then I would ever be able to put in 6 discs all in 1 disc so I am pretty happy...

02blackwrx- yah, those things are hard to find.
i might just fabricate one from a pocket i took off my honda
prelude. i have a vtec controller under the stereo on that car so took the pocket out. hahaha. :D will check out those
universal ones too, if it looks like too much work.

event he universal one doesnt look that good, so if you could fabricate it, I would definatly do that...it would look a lot better and probably fit better also...the universal one fits great, but it just doesnt look as nice...its something I can deal with though...

yah, im going to take off the mounting clips off the trim that
goes around the center dash
and try out different pockets and mounting angles to decide
how to go about it. i did this on my other car and turned out
pretty good at the end. :D just takes a lot of time... wonder
if it would look good with the pocket on the top instead of
below the HU....hummmmm....

I tryed placing the deck on the bottom w/ the pocket on top...it didnt look right..its way to low and looks kinda weird.

just for the heck of it, i tried putting in the
pocket into the wrx which i took off my honda.
to my surprise, the pocket fit perfectly!! :D

you dont even need any mounting clips or
anything. just some weathering gasket
(5-6mm thick) on
the pocket's sides to mesh with the wrx stereo
bracket and another gasket between the
new HU and pocket. the wrx trim plate will
press up on the pocket making a solid friction fit.
:D the pocket will not move and since it's
weathering gasket, not too worried about it
rattling later.

the best part is that since you can just pull
out the pocket next time when you're ready
to upgrade your amps or sub, you dont even
need to take out the new HU!

the only time consuming part about the install
was since it was the first time for me to route
12v continuous through the firewall, finding the
right grommet to go through was kind of a
challenge. i used the hole behind the clutch...
perfect access to the battery.

im going to finish up tonight and will take a
few picts. :p

Do you need the spacer kit to install any brand of aftermarket speaker? Anyone know the Subaru part# for the spacer kit?

yeh, pretty much all speakers that are anywhere close to the
size of the factor speakers will require a spacer. but i dont
think subaru sells the adapters by themselves (comes with
premium speaker kit).

you should contact east coast scooby. he makes custom ones
out of MDF. :)

btw, the alpine is wiredup and turned out very well...
based on my observations, you must change head unit too
along with at least the front speakers to make the system
sound decent. hahaha. :p
