? On the First Oil Change

Question #1. Should i change at 1,000 or 3,000 for the first change.

Question #2. I've heard that using synthetic oil for the first change is not the best, though my family has used synthetic with everycar rightaway and no problem, and the cars have lasted forever, till idiots run stop signs and stuff and wreck my mom's cars lol.

I was going to use synthetic i'm just seeing what everyone else thinks.

Thanks,
Raymond

i did my first oil change at 1K miles. i switched to synthetic synthetic and i havent had any problems. the reason that i did my first oil change at 1K was because some mechanic once told me that it was smart to do so beacuse you get rid of any particles that the oil has picked up like small bits of metal from the engine in the break in period. i dunno, but doesnt seem to hurt.

i did my first oil change at 1000 and did it again at 3000. i switched from dino oil to synthetic after that.
some people say that it is better to do it right away.

My first was at 1k, but I still use dino oil. Don't plan on switching to synthetic til 10k.

I did the same thing except switched to syn. on my 3rd oil change at 6000miles. I still had 5qt's of 10w30 dyno penzoil left in the box.

I switched my oil at 1k but kept the dyno oil unitl the 6k mark. I just remember ppl saying that by using the dyno oil you give the gaskets and other things a better chance to seal properly, because supposedly the synthic oil does not allow this to happen properly, please correct me if wrong I just heard it was an old muscle car way of doing things. I happen to think that switiching to synth oil at the first oil change would be no problem, I've heard from various ppl that high end sports car come straight from the facotry with synth oil, but being the paranoid person I am I waited on the synth oil till I hit the 6k mark and I've had no problems. BTW I don't follow the manual in regards to the oil change interval, I change it every 3k miles

Another Question, the manual says that you can use 10w 30 or 5w 30, i live in souther texas where it does not get cold, so basically by what the manual says I can run 10w 30, is there a difference in performance between 5w 30 and 10w 30?

I don't think you'll see a change in performance between those two weights. I have used both in my car with out any problems. If you lived some where really cold then I would suggest going with the 5w 30 (IIRC thats the oil that is less viscous), so that the oil is more fluid in the cold or if it where really hot where you lived then I would choose the 10w 30 oil so that the oil would be more viscous and better suited for the high temps. I'm sure other's on here can provide better answers, but that's my 0.02

the first number is the viscosity of the oil cold and the second number is when it's hot.

so basically both have the same characteristics at operating temp.

So technically the colder the weather you'd want the first number to be lower(eg 5w)

Most people here are from CA and use 10w30 including myself.

try doing a search on "oil" it's been beatin' to death.

eric

EDIT: also i've heard lower weight oils like 5w are prone to leaking out of the pan on a hot 95+ Texan day. makes sense too because it's less vicious unless it's at oper temp. Just use 10w30 Mobil 1 and you'll be fine!
