speed sensor problems

I have a 97 legacy 2.2 with an automatic transmition. Recently I replaced my #2 speed sensor as suggested by my cpu. The check engine light when off and problems with Transmition fluid pressure stopped. The next day after a short drive the check engine light came back on and after inspecting the head of the new sensor I found that it was also damaged. The problems with fluid pressure have not returned. The head of the speed sensor is located sits very close to teeth on the front end of the drive shaft. I was wondering if the drive shaft was some how loose. I also believe that all the miles on poorly maintained back roads in newyork and vermont have given my car a case of soft shell. Would the twisting in my car allow the drive shaft to move enough to contact the speed sensor? I was considering placing a rubber washer as a spacer holding the speed sensor a few more mm. away from the drive shaft but I'm afraid that this would make the speed sensor read that the shaft is spinning slower then it is. Suggestions would be very welcome. Its a car with a whole lot of miles but I would like to keep it around for a couple more years.
