EQ Tuning 01-02-2009, 11:24 AM Hey Ed, I have a nasty rattle coming from the uppipe heatshield....can you guys reweld the heatshield? Or do you carry uppipes? I'm not sure if I should replace it with an aftermarket piece....not sure if there are any gains to be had from an aftermarket uppipe since they are both catless.... We do carry uppipes. There are some slight gains to be had via slightly large and smoother piping, but its not a big gain overall. The main benefit is getting rid of the stock heatshield that always breaks loose and the stock flex section can sometimes crack as well. Most exhaust shops will tack your stock heatshield back in place for around $20. Thanks -- Ed EQ Tuning 01-05-2009, 07:06 PM My car runs like a beast. EQ FTW Glad to hear your car is running well! EQ Tuning 01-19-2009, 04:27 PM Hey Ed, what are average numbers for a 07 with catless TBE, CAI, and MBC on 91? I'm just wondering how my numbers stack up as you've tuned more of them now. I usually see 270-275whp with that setup. Once in a while I'll get one lower or one higher. With headers they can do about 285whp. Thanks -- Ed Ed, what are the differences (advantages/disadvantages) of using a manual boost controller versus a boost control solenoid (I have a GM 3 port on my car right now)? EQ Tuning 02-20-2009, 11:19 AM Ed, what are the differences (advantages/disadvantages) of using a manual boost controller versus a boost control solenoid (I have a GM 3 port on my car right now)? The 3-port solenoid is a good upgrade over stock in terms of response, but a good MBC will still give you significantly better response than the 3-port. This is especially true in the lower gears where its harder to get the turbo spooled up. The MBC also provides more stable and consistent boost levels with very little to no spiking. When tuning a solenoid based system, there's always a trade off between boost response in the lower gears and boost stability in the higher gears and more load. If you tune to completely eliminate spiking and wavering under higher loads, you will be giving up significant response in the lower gears. The MBC gives you the best of both worlds. The only major drawback of the MBC is that it leaves the customer the power to potentially turn up the boost and cause damage. I've found this not to be an issue as long as the customer is fully educated and understands that if he messes with the MBC, he will likely cause problems. Most people don't want to blow their engines, so they take this advice seriously and don't mess with the MBC after the tune. I hope that answers your question. Thanks -- Ed Thanks for the detailed explanation. Yeah, the ability to turn up boost is the thing what scares me. I would know not to even look at it wrong, but I cannot say the same thing for other people...I am just paranoid that someone else will mess with it (valets, people at the meets or track days or auto-x, etc). So, I presume getting an electronic boost controller would give me the same benefits only with security that people would not be able to mess with my boost levels? And are there downsides to that option (outside of cost and lengthier install)? EQ Tuning 02-20-2009, 11:58 AM bump EQ Tuning 02-20-2009, 12:05 PM Thanks for the detailed explanation. So, I presume getting an electronic boost controller would give me the same benefits only with security that people would not be able to mess with my boost levels? And are there downsides to that option (outside of cost and lengthier install)? You're right that there is some risk that someone else will turn up the boost if they have access to your engine bay. We usually install the MBC's in a discreet location so its not obviously visible and not too easily accessible. This alleviates most of that risk. We also do mark the MBC after its set so you have a visual reference of where its supposed to be. Finally, there is still a fuel cut failsafe that is set in the ECU, so if someone does manage to turn up your boost significantly when you're not looking, the ECU will hit fuel cut to protect the engine. This will also signal that something is not right to the driver. EBC's are still solenoid based systems and generally will not outperform the stock ECU with a 3-port solenoid and a good tune. They also tend to be very inconsistent and finicky when you encounter varying weather and elevation conditions. EQ Tuning 04-29-2009, 05:56 PM Ed, curious on what was used back in the day to tune cars before accessport. hydra is a bit spendy for my legacy ss....any other options? Before AP, there was Ecutek, UTEC, Unichip, and other piggy backs none of which ran too well. The only options for older cars are piggy backs or standalones like the Hydra or AEM EMS. AEM is my preference. Thanks -- Ed PTRex 04-30-2009, 08:08 AM Will the tune work on Bajas? I have a friend who might be interested. EQ Tuning 04-30-2009, 03:58 PM Will the tune work on Bajas?
