Its getting there. The mezzanine is all done. Now we're just waiting for the sprinklers to get done then a little more sheet rock and we're ready to paint the whole place.

The first lift is going in tomorrow as well!

Its funny as I've tuned a handful of 08 STI's but no 08 WRX's until now. I was blown away at the overall power and especially the torque on this bad boy!

FYI, this car has a Cobb Catted DP, SPT Catback (quiet), MBC, and EQ Custom Tune. Here is the dyno chart on a nice cold night at 17psi peak:

We actually had a few pulls with torque over 300ft-lbs, but we dialed it back a bit for reliability and consistancy. All in all this car takes off with fury from just about any RPM... awesome for such a simple setup.

We're actually in the process of putting together our own kit. If you're in a hurry, I like the coolingmist and SMC kits, but both have their issues.

Hey Ed, I have a nasty rattle coming from the uppipe heatshield....can you guys reweld the heatshield? Or do you carry uppipes?

I'm not sure if I should replace it with an aftermarket piece....not sure if there are any gains to be had from an aftermarket uppipe since they are both catless....

We do carry uppipes. There are some slight gains to be had via slightly large and smoother piping, but its not a big gain overall. The main benefit is getting rid of the stock heatshield that always breaks loose and the stock flex section can sometimes crack as well.

Most exhaust shops will tack your stock heatshield back in place for around $20.

Cobb Catless TBE, Perrin EL Headers, SPT Intake, Hallman MBC, Tuned with Cobb AP V2 on 91 Octane on a cool day:

I'm doing all my tuning on the road but I use a wideband O2 and my proprietary road dyno software to get the necessary data and feedback for the tune. You also get a whp/wtq chart just like on a chassis dyno.

I would expect your car to make around 315-325whp with that setup on 91 Octane. I do very highly recommend a Hallman MBC mainly for great response, drivability, and boost stability and consistency. We can put one in for you just prior to the tune.

Your response isn't too bad once you get past 4k RPM. You can also rev to 7500, so that's a pretty good powerband. Just keep those RPM's up ;)

Thumbs up to the guys at EQ Tuning and Ed him self for Installing a MBC and performing an awesome custom tune for me on my 07 WRX.
Ed logged my car with my previous tune from a shop which I will not release their name out of respect, Showed me the good and bad of the tune ( Mostly bad :( )
We then set off to tune the car for the next 2.5 - 3 hours, The end result Is a Smokin Fast WRX TR that pulls like a freight train at only 19 PSI.

I have to say that I am very very happy with the tune and the drive home was amazing, power kicks In very early and hold all the way to redline.
I will definitely be back once I build up A engine and puts some more goodies on the car!

To answer your question: Assuming that you'll be getting a tune in the near future, yes you can use a MBC on a stock turbo. Hallman would be a good brand to get. Hope this helps man!

I do recommend using an MBC even with the stock turbo. It will greatly improve response and overall drive-ability. We carry the Hallman Pro RX MBC's for $100 and we can install them just prior to the tune.

I do recommend using an MBC even with the stock turbo. It will greatly improve response and overall drive-ability. We carry the Hallman Pro RX MBC's for $100 and we can install them just prior to the tune.

The 3-port solenoid is a good upgrade over stock in terms of response, but a good MBC will still give you significantly better response than the 3-port. This is especially true in the lower gears where its harder to get the turbo spooled up.

The MBC also provides more stable and consistent boost levels with very little to no spiking. When tuning a solenoid based system, there's always a trade off between boost response in the lower gears and boost stability in the higher gears and more load. If you tune to completely eliminate spiking and wavering under higher loads, you will be giving up significant response in the lower gears. The MBC gives you the best of both worlds.

The only major drawback of the MBC is that it leaves the customer the power to potentially turn up the boost and cause damage. I've found this not to be an issue as long as the customer is fully educated and understands that if he messes with the MBC, he will likely cause problems. Most people don't want to blow their engines, so they take this advice seriously and don't mess with the MBC after the tune.

You're right that there is some risk that someone else will turn up the boost if they have access to your engine bay. We usually install the MBC's in a discreet location so its not obviously visible and not too easily accessible. This alleviates most of that risk. We also do mark the MBC after its set so you have a visual reference of where its supposed to be.

Finally, there is still a fuel cut failsafe that is set in the ECU, so if someone does manage to turn up your boost significantly when you're not looking, the ECU will hit fuel cut to protect the engine. This will also signal that something is not right to the driver.

EBC's are still solenoid based systems and generally will not outperform the stock ECU with a 3-port solenoid and a good tune. They also tend to be very inconsistent and finicky when you encounter varying weather and elevation conditions.

About 4 years ago I wrote my own Road Dyno software that calculates whp/wtq by looking at the change in RPM over time, and using calibration data such as weight, drag coefficient, frontal area, gearing, and tire size. When used properly on a flat road, the curves and numbers are very consistent and have been shown to read within a couple whp of a Mustang Chassis Dyno.

Here's a cool tune we did yesterday...

This is an 02 WRX with almost 140k miles on it... and still running strong!

Here's the setup:

TD05-20G - 7cm hotside / 2.4" inlet
SSAC FMIC
DW750cc Injectors
Perrin Big MAF Intake
Hallman MBC
SMC Meth Injection Kit - 50/50 mix
EQ Custom Tune using Cobb AP V2

Considering the high mileage engine, we kept the tune conservative at about 21psi with a safe a/f and relaxed timing. It still made for a very quick bugeye!

Woohoo! Ed and his crew were awesome today. They took a huge load off my chest and made the end of this nightmare of a week sweeeet.

First, Adam and Chris worked FAST(less money out of my pocket).. and their work is quality.

Then Ed and I went out for a tune.. for FIVE hours.

I don't know much about cars so I had a ton of questions and he was more than happy to answer them without making me feel like an idiot. Hell, I called my hood the trunk :) Haha.

Overall, the drive was worth it and I had a blast shootin the breeze.

I've been to other shops and seriously have never felt so at home. Thumbs up for you guys.

Btw Ed, the car is soooo smooth and I used to get this annoying stutter whenever I let off the gas in the lower gears.. not anymore :) Sorry, I'm a kiss @#$

A custom tune will give you very significant gains in power and response as well as give you a much smoother power band all around. This is true with even for a bone stock car.

Cobb AP for a stocker shows less than 1 HP gain (gains only with going catless) for the 2006/07 model. 20hp increase with a downpipe.

Vishnu still shows a stage subzero with 280 hp for a stocker(not whp).

Just curious what your results would be.

For reference, a bone stock 06 WRX puts down 170-180whp and around 200ft-lbs.

Before AP, there was Ecutek, UTEC, Unichip, and other piggy backs none of which ran too well. The only options for older cars are piggy backs or standalones like the Hydra or AEM EMS. AEM is my preference.
