I understand that LA causes significantly more pollution than Sacramento. I understand they have more operational fuel cell stations. However, given the number of people (including myself) that commute right past the Hydrogen partnership building and fueling station in Sacramento and the recent increases in efficiency (and decreases in price) of home hydrogen fueling stations it seems irrational to make this vehicle available only to residents of a small area of of the state.
I carpool to work everyday as my roommate and i are both employed by Cisco Systems and work in Racho Cordova. Aside from minimizing the impact from rising gas prices on our pocket book there is no benefit for us to do this, as none of the heavily congested downtown freeways has a carpool lane. The only alternative for us is to seek greener transportation, and hydrogen is the greenest.
As a consumer considering another Honda vehicle ULEV (the Civic GX, natural gas vehicle) it is upsetting to me that my zip code is the only determining factor in whether or not I have any choice in the low/no carbon emission vehicle market.
This frustration is particularly compounded because of how the hydrogen is to be generated. As i am sure you are aware, SMUD is the most green electricity provider in the US, and probably all of the Americas... Given the availability of this cheap, green energy available right in my garage it angers me that i must consider a costly, carbon producing CNG terminal to power a green vehicle simply because i choose not to live in the Los Angeles Area.
So Governor, my question is this. You pressured Honda to release the FCX Clarity here in California before any other place in the world. I am as concerned about the environment as any person in Irvine. I pay my taxes just like everyone else in Irvine. Why does my zip exclude me from owning the car that might one day help save us all.
Sincerely and severely,
Jack Gross
