Reasonably priced tires with UTQG rating less than 200?
iv got an 06 STi and those RE070 tires where great. since then i bought some Toyo Proxes 4's and all I can say is these things are garbage. Im taking turns at half the speeds i use to take and im squeeling and sliding all over the place.
I recently found out (and correct me if im wrong) that the UTQG rating on the bridgestones was 140 and these toyos are at a pathetic 300...
...I want to drive a sports car not my grandmas Mercury.
I believe it to be true that a lower UTQG rating = a higher performing and stickier tire. (let me know if im wrong)
so here is my question... what tires can i get that will have a UTQG rating of less than 200 and will not brake the bank. Im setting the expectation of spending $800-$1000 every 18 months on tires with about 800-1000 miles driven each month.
Thanks

While you're generally correct in that high 'wear rating' indicates a quality that is usually not found in high performance tires I may have stumbled across an exception. Go to www.tirerack.com , select 'tires' then 'brand' then General,as in the manuf. when the screen pops up in the upper left select 'Exclaim UHP' tire. They have very good traction ratings, but wait 'till you see the wear rating and the price, like $70+ ea. Read the surveys, stats, and the 8 million reviews. No I didn't get 'em I bought Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's which I've found superb, but I coulda got 3 sets of these.

You know I was 90% sold on that pole position. When I was looking earlier this summer they were selling for $135 ea for 225/17's.I have bridgestones on my Jeep and generally love 'em, but the bridgestones just don't quite have the steering feel the michelin's have so I ante'd up another $200 because i'm a **** for feel. I'm old and I figure if you can't grope a woman-grope the road.

Do you realize Bridgestone Potenza RE070 & Toyo Proxes 4 are completely DIFFERENT tire in catagories?! One is summer/performance tire & the other one all-season tire!!!
About UTQG rating... it only works for comparison treadwear within the same brand. Bridgestone's 300 treadwear is not necessary the same as Toyo's 300 treadwear.
Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R is supposed to be a GREAT performance tire. It's a very popular tuner's choice in Japan as well. It's on special price for $135 ea. in 225/45-17 at Tirerack, but I'd personally get 245/40-17 if I were you (assuming for your stock BBS).
Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position is also a great tire. OEM tire for Infiniti G35 & Honda S2000. I'd get RE-01R or RE050A Pole Position over other brand for the money.

I just checked tire rack and the 225/17 RE050A pole positions are selling for $123 ea. I think that has to be the best tire buy in America today and I'm a died in the wool michelin man. The 235's are only $140 but the 245's got into the 180+ range and that would not be enough improvement for the $. I really think the pole positions would be the best all atound tire in that bridgestone group.

stock re070s in 225's aren't that much more
about 155
IMHO they are THE tires to get
very wide tread ratio to shoulder so they are more comparable to 245 re01rs

The Hankook z212 is a decently priced sticky tire.
Advan Neovas, michelin PS2s, and Brdigestone RE-01s are all nice but a little pricey

I was comparing the hankook z212's (which are rated 200/a/a) with the BFGoodrich g-force sport's (which are rated 340/aa/a) so even though the BFG's are stiffer (better tread life) aren't they still stickier/have better traction since they have a higher traction rating?
