wagon and offsets, again
I posted this as a reply on another thread but thought it may get more response as its own post.
It is my understanding that we wagon owners can run a 17x7.5 wheel with a 205/45/17 tire with no issues, correct?
Now my understanding of this may be way out so feel free to correct me. I was doing a bit of number crunching, if you have a 7.5" (190.5mm) wide rim and the offset is 48mm does this not leave a remainder of 47.25mm sticking out towards the outside of the car, from the mounting surface ( 190.5 divide by 2 to get the center of the rim the subtract the offset) ??
If you have a 7" (177.8mm) rim you should be able to use an offset as low as 41.25mm as this would leave 47.25mm sticking out towards the outside of the car. We have all read that 48mm offset works, so if we need to keep the portion of wheel that sticks out to be below 47.25mm then we should be able to run 43mm, 45mm rims(in a 7" wide model). I am not taking wheel bearing loads into consideration here as we hear that it "may" be an issue. This is only about offset. I realize that a 7" wheel limits tire width but if you only want to run a 205 series tire than this should work.
Am I out to lunch or doesn't this make sense, comments please.

The question is "shouldn't we be able to run a lower offset in a 7" wide wheel as compared to a 7.5 inch wide wheel"? If the above mentioned number crunching is correct then a 43mm or 45mm offset should work.
All that should matter is that the amount of rim sticking out towards the outside of the car has to be the same or lower than a 48mm to 53mm offset wheel. So if a 7.5 inch wide wheel has a 48mm to 53mm offset then it woud have 47.25mm to 44.25mm sticking out towards the outside of the car. Therefore, a 7 inch wheel could have an offset of 41.25mm to 44.25mm offset to achieve the same. Does this make sense??

More info
Just wanted to add that 225's will work with a +48 offset.
I own a 04 wagon and am running on Rota SDRs with +48mm offset and 225 Falken ST-115s. They fit fine, have plenty of clearance, and have not rubbed when driving hard or toting 4 paddlers and 4 boats (about 800 pounds) on Vermont's bumpy, dirt, roads.

Also, remember this- not all tires are the exact size of their specified size. E.G. a 225/45 Potenza S-03 is much wider than a 225/45 Yoko ES100. 225 S03s will require more camber to run with a given offset than 225 yokos, or pretty much any other standard tire for that matter. Other "large" tires are Falken Azenis and Kumho MX. So, before you settle on a tire, go to TireRack and check the physical width of the shoulder and tread to help you decide on what size to get.

215/45/17 wwon't rub, i got an 06 wagon and i got some rota torques 7.5 wide and i got 225/45/17 with some cobb lowering springs. it doesnt rub unless i hit a sharp turn or if i have more than 2 people in my car....whick sucks...so 215/45/17 on a 7.5 rim is cool....that was my old set up, no rub what so ever
