I know a lot of you are camera buffs so I figured I'd ask here.

I would like a new camera as the one I have now sucks. It's one of those old Sony 1.5 pixel cameras. Got it when I was in Tokyo in 2000. Good for the glove box.

Would like something else that will take solid pictures without breaking the bank. Even something used would be great. Any ideas?

What exactly is breaking the bank?

Just go to Cannon's website and spend as much or as little as you want :p

+1 for Canon. My roommate has the SD600 and it takes AWESOME pictures.

You might be able to get the SD700 for under $300 now too.

any canon point-and-shoot FTW!!1!1!! (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=113)
S/SD-series is the best IMO.
then A-series (Main drawback to the A-series is they require AA/AAA batteries and they're slightly bigger).

for more camera buff ppl, the G-series is a nice mix of P&S ease and SLR functions.
I have a G6 I use at work (8.1mp) for misc shots and it works very well.
good for snapshots as well as staged studio type shots (including F-stop bracketing).

and of course you can jump on board w/ any of their SLR's if you're more of a hobbiest camera guy.

And seriously, stay away from Minolta, I had a point and shoot and it was freaking slow to start up, the menus were slow, the flash charged slowly, and it would forget the date and time when swapping out batteries, it seriously sucked.

I have a Kodak P&S now and and really happy with it, although, it's a little large for today's standards.

damn im a cheap sob.

I also have some pos camera now from costco. Was like $250 back in 2004 and sucks badly. It over focuses. I know $300 is a steal and i'm still having trouble justifying the price.

What about the SD750? I may have to dig-up old best buy cards and ask a relative Best Buy worker for a discount.

take the old one back to costco, sometimes they'll replace it with one of the equal value (from the time)

if you bought it in 2004 and it was under their old policy of 100% customer satisfaction then you prolly have a chance of getting an upgrade.
they just recently changed their policy (to aviod people abusing the return policy) and IIRC its only effective on purchases from that point on.

worth a shot if you still have the receipt.

You guys are all retards.

The camera doesn't matter, the photographer does.

Minolta doesn't make cameras anymore. They sold them to Sony over a year ago.

If you want a point and shoot, grab a Casio. Good features for the price.
If you want a SLR, buy which ever you can afford - Pentax, Nikon, Canon, they are all the same. Nikons are easier to use, Canons ergonomics suck. Canon markets the crap out of their cameras, but Nikon and Canon have equal market share.

If you want image quality, you'll buy a film camera, but I don't think thats what you want.

I bought a Nikon D50 for about $300.

Canon or Nikon x100. I have two canon DSLRs, but for point and shoot, I went with Nikon. Stay away from ones that take regular batteries. Li-Ion batteries are a good thing.

A couple shots I took with the Nikon Coolpix P4. Just a pocket sized point and shoot cam that I bought for my wife on our honeymoon.

not too shabby, I used to have a Nikon Coolpix 5700 looked like a slr, had the reversable lcd screen 4.9mp overall not too shabby, packed it round Scotland/England 2 summers ago.
Before that was a Minolta Dimage S414 3.9mp, not bad camera for the time. And 1st digi cam I ever owned was a Olympus D-370 with a whopping 1.3mp. Before I had a Nikon D75 35mm slr, now that was nice camera till someone who thought so too stole it

I still like Fujis. I have a Rebel xti, and, while it's a big improvement, my Fuji large-format point-and-shoot took great pictures.......and it cost me $250 years ago.

Taking your time with composition and getting the right lighting is what makes good pictures after a certain point; if you want a super-small camera, the good ones are more expensive because all the components have to be better to perfom optimally in a small case with less lens depth.

Engrish much? ;)

Good point, the lighting and composition are the main factors in getting a good picture. Even if you have a $4000 DSLR, if your lighting sucks and you don't know how to compose a shot, it's going to look worse than a picture from a $20 throw-away camera.

I bought a cannon sd800is a few months back and it works great as a point and shoot camera. Image stabilizer works great. I rarely ever get a blury picture. I bought it for $400 a few months back when it first came out so you should be able to find it for around $300 now.
