I finally got around and had Ed @ EQTuning road tune my car! I'm not a new guy. I've made a few posts under another user name "2004Wagon" but since i-Club does not have the option to change my user name, I have to set up a new account.
My car is a 2004 WRX wagon and it is totally stock except for my US MY04 STI BBS wheels. I've been running Cobb AP Stage 1 map (and later CA map) ever since Cobb released the AP. I bought it when Cobb had them for $555 so I was one of the early adopters.
While Cobb fixed the closed/open loop issue and gave a little bit more power, I suspected it did not run perfectly. I could hear ping occasionally under WOT. I finally got around and ran Tari and logged some data to confirm. Knock correction was around 4-6 and IAM was at 8. So even though the car is not self destructing, the Cobb map was not performing perfectly.
That was why I wanted to get my car custom tuned. Even though it was stock. I wanted it to run well and last a long time. Which means that it should run ping free with safety margin. After much research, I picked Ed @ EQTuning to tune my car.
Ed was very careful and was on the same page with my objective. And I was suprised by the extra power gained and at the same time the car ran smoother and ping free! Boost comes on faster and more lag free than my original Cobb map.
Afterwards, I did some logging on my own and the car is running perfectly with IAM = 16 and knock correction staying high, with much more power to boot!
How much did it run you? I can PM you for that if you'd like...in fact ill do that now :)

Thanks for the nice review Vincent. I actually had not tuned a completely stock WRX in quite some time and forgot how much fun they can be with just a good tune. I think the fact that the car is so quiet makes it feel like its pulling even harder than it is ;). Enjoy the new tune and please let me know if you have any questions.

I was wondering what you knew about protuning a NA, like my L. I hear a lot of good things about Mike and Ed and their tunes, but I haven't heard too much about tuning the NA's. I am guessing that it isn't really worthwhile for an NA, but yeah. I am just curious.

From what I read in a recent subiesport, Cobb is working on a reflash for the RS/NA imprezas. Nothing on their website yet though.

That's the point, a 2004 WRX with 3 cats in place will NOT make 203whp on a mustang, and we are led to believe that Ed's road dyno is in line with the Gruppe-S heartbreaker. I just wanted to hear Ed's explanation as to how those numbers were achieved before raising the BS flag.
I know EQ is gaining a respected following for his tuning ability, but those numbers seem a little bit off what you can expect from a stock car...perhaps Ed will enlighten us on how he's achieving SO much more than other tuners.

I dont think they are THAT far off, and I personally have not seen a pro-tuned wrx with full stock exhaust put on the GS dyno, so what are you basing this on?
Either way, downsti ran a 12.4 on a stock turbo, so thats pretty inline with the protuned stis that put out 280whp+ on the GS dyno
Eliminating the cats isnt always needed to make good power, its just safer to do so at elevated boost levels to lower egts and over all engine temps (which helps reduce knock potential)

This was quite a strong motor and responded very well to tuning. This car still has the stock solenoid, so its only running a max of 14.5psi. AFR's are around 10.5:1 with loads of timing. The key was figuring out that this car made the best power with a little more fuel and timing. It took some time to dial in the timing curve propperly and once everything was massaged out, the car consistantly made ~200whp and 200ft-lbs and was knock free. Generally stock cars with a good tune will make ~190whp, so this isn't too far off considering I took some extra time on this car and it seems to be a strong motor in general.

don't knock it if you don't know what you're talking about.
One of the first cars tuned by Ed was an 04 WRX with nothing else and made 193~WHP on the Gruppe-S dyno.
Ed, do you still have that dyno anywhere from Joel's car when you guys took it there? It was like two years ago, so those picks could have been on your laptop that got stolen along with your ECUTek stuff.

Well I know a stock STI puts down 210-220whp on a mustang, so to get within 10whp with just a flash on a WRX, running 3 cats and a stock turbo is something very special indeed ;)
As you clearly understand, tuning is more about real world engine performance and not about peak figures, but to compare a road dyno's figures with that of a Mustang dyno is naive.
Ed has gained a great reputation, and you don't get that without happy customers, to date I have never seen or heard a comment about EQ that wasn't positive and many, many people, including yourself, are very happy with their tunes, but 203whp on a stock motor...come on, pull the other one.

I do agree that the 203whp could very well read differently on the GS dyno.
For that reason, I do plan on having my car dynod at GS for the sake of having something people can compare with as my car also has road dyno numbers.

ATP no longer dyno's to the public, we did a comparison with Krinkov's car between our dyno and ATP's and 30 mins or so difference.
ATP = 353whp
Gruppe-S = 307whp
As for the 04 WRX that belonged to Joel according to the dyno logs the most hp it made on the dyno was 171whp, I have the graphs they are dated 2/18/05.
To the original poster, congrats looks like you have a strong motor and a great tune from Ed, curves look great!

Could it really be that low? Would tire size play a factor in the output?
When you ran a baseline of my car with the stock ECU (4/17/05) and an uppipe it was at 166WHP/178lb-ft. at the wheels.
Seeing as Joel's car was significantly faster then mine back when he had it dynoed on 2/18/05 and I can only assume there was some thing weird with those numbers.
Anyways...
I will be by at some point to get a baseline of what I have now if that is cool with you cause I am curious what numbers it puts down now that I finally am done with power mods.

Well based on no car to date putting down more than 185whp stock tuned, Joel's then numbers of 171whp (15-20whp over stock with just a flash is more than decent) came as no surprise but feel free to assume....
Sure give us a call we'll be happy to get you squared away with a baseline.

Joel's car was one of the first ones I ever tuned and I was still working out my base mapping. I didn't have a wideband at that point and the a/f was extremely conservative when it made it on Gruppe-S's dyno. The car certainly gained quite a bit once I re-tuned it with a wideband. I also believe we figured out that the tire size was incorrect in the configuration, so the numbers off the road dyno were indeed skewed on Joel's car untill I fixed the bug in the configurations.
Since then there have been several cars that have been dyno'd at Gruppe-S and on the road dyno and have been within 3whp of eachother. I am not claiming that every car is going to make exactly the same power on any other dyno as it does on my road dyno. Everyone has to remember that any dyno numbers vary quite a bit depending on varying weather conditions. Its also important to remember that a car that was tuned on the road will not necessarily perform the same way on a dyno and vice versa. Air flow over the IC and loading on a dyno is always a bit different as compared to that on a road.
Finally, I'd like to say that I do my best to keep my road dyno numbers as consistant and conservative as possible. Either way, I don't think anyone should play number games with any dyno chart... its just pointless. Cars are not raced on dyno's. There have been many cars with lower dyno numbers that end up being significantly faster on the road than cars with higher dyno numbers. PM downsti for details ;).
Thanks

When you speak on speculation complete speculation you look like an ass to people. Take me for example, a guy who ran on gst dyno and then Ed's and put down almost identical hp with 1-2 on each run including a best that was exactly the same.....see i've experienced both and you haven't. to me you look like a total ass. You are basically calling Ed a liar then saying his software is not inline with it when you have no idea except that of what you have conceived in your head, and even that is pretty limited unless you have ed's software.............but to make such a bold statement as you did...........you'd think one would have some experience with the matter at hand but.........anyways Ed's tuned car's et's and perf. don't lie...........but I challenge you, run your car at GSt and then with ed and see what numbers you get......

you called someone out on a ~1.5yr old post?
wow.
I have opinions about ed, they are just that. Fictitious dyno software != real dyno. 'Real world' tuning doesn't make much of a difference over dyno tuning.
Has anyone here operated a real dyno (aside from the obvious)? Anyone know about "smoothing"? How about 'noisy data'?
