This is my problem, I bought 17" wheels for my car which were labeled for Subaru on eBay, but they had an offset of 42, which I now understand looks great, but rubs in the rear. So, due to the 90K+ miles on my car and extra weight, it's rubs alot.
My solution, is to raise the rear a little to match the front.
So, does anyone know if the Outback rear struts will fit, and how much it will raise the suspension, or should I install new factory springs in the rear?
Oh yeah, cost is an issue.

Check out the Legacy forum on www.nasioc.com. Please identify the year and specific model of your car in your info.

Sorry man, I thought I had it in there. I have a '99 legacy L (2.2L).

Well, 42 is an offset for some people. The Outback suspension will work however I do not think it will look very good. Anything Outback or Leg from the same model is switchable.

get a ALK and chop or buy lower springs for the front and i would roll your back gaurds to stop the scrubbing.

Subaruparts.com sells a heavy duty spring set that is designed for cars carrying heavier loads. It might support the weight of back end and keep it from sagging. Or maybe you just need some new shocks in the rear.
good luck
