n00b at buying new cars

i'm looking for a white 04+ wagon, and it is hard to find any. not only are most of the WRX's sedans, but the wagons are rarely white, so I am thinking about purchasing a new one. I am selling my Evo, and I hope to get 24k from it, but i don't want to spend all of that money on a new car.

Could someone please explain how I could put, let's say, 20k down and pay the rest off over time? Is this possible?

If you purchase a car from the dealership then they will be happy to take a down payment and finance the rest of the car. If you are buying the car from an individual then I would reccomend getting a loan from a bank for the amount of the car, make sure the loan has no pre-payment penelty and just make a big payment up front, then pay the rest on your scheduled payments.
