View Full Version : DON'T buy Sylvania Silverstar bulbs!
WRXakaBooSTi 12-30-2005, 06:23 PM For my birthday back in august (just 4 months ago), my friend got me a set of sylvania silverstars for my 04 wrx. well, 3 days ago driverside low beam bulb went out, and just today the passenger side bulb died as well. yep... great product sylvania, you lasted me a whole 4 months. as soon as it stops raining, im putting the stock bulbs back in. (also, when i installed them i was very careful not to touch them on the glass part because i know that the finger oils can destroy bulbs)
YOU SUCK SYLVANIA SILVERSTARS!!!!!
Zoeb2s 12-30-2005, 06:28 PM weird, I had a set for over a year in my 325is.
From the day I bought it to the day I sold it....and they were still working when i sold the car.
Both of my fogs (w/silverstars) went out within a week of each other. At about 6 months of use.
My headlights lasted about a year. They seem pretty unreliable.
2cam16 12-30-2005, 06:49 PM There are 2 types of Sylvanias. One group made in the US and another from Europe. I've heard the European ones last longer.

i have them in my fogs and head lamps now for 2 months...no issues....and why are you making such a fuss for? its not like YOU bought them with YOUR money...just go get some other bulbs now and experiment with them :)
KGB4187 12-30-2005, 06:58 PM I got them for my old car, one burned out within a couple months too.
ldivinag 12-30-2005, 07:04 PM ha ha...
i had them on the 02. while they were whiter, they werent BRIGHTER.
was mad so i ended up with HIDs... (granted a car came with it...) lol...
btw, if i can find them,
FS: 2 silverstars for the bugeyes... cheap...
pleiad7 12-30-2005, 07:44 PM Sylvania Silverstars suck... they have to overload the filament to overcome the loss of light due to the stupid blue coating. If you want quality, buy the euro-spec Osram Silverstars. Superior light output, no blue poser tint, and they last forever. I bought mine here (http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk/product.asp?P_ID=123&strPageHistory=search&strKeywords=osram,silverstar&numPageStartPosition=1&strSearchCriteria=any&PT_ID=all).
WRXakaBooSTi 12-30-2005, 07:48 PM i have them in my fogs and head lamps now for 2 months...no issues....and why are you making such a fuss for? its not like YOU bought them with YOUR money...just go get some other bulbs now and experiment with them :)
im making a fuss because i dont want any fellow suby owners to waste their money! if the people on this board didnt review products, people would end up getting ripped off much more often. one more thing, my silverstars did not produce an even light either... the driver side had a hot spot. ive since put my stock bulbs back in and both headlights create an even light. i thought maybe the hot spot was due to my headlight leveling being off, but its apparent that it was the silverstar's fault.
weird, I've had mine for two years +. still going strong.... knock on wood. btw, I don't have drl on.
Project Worx 12-30-2005, 07:59 PM I heard these where good.. Jus on the too bright side.
pbchief2 12-30-2005, 08:04 PM funny, I bought mine 2 days after I left the lot Oct. 2002 and they still worked when I sent my light away in August.
slagehammer 12-30-2005, 08:04 PM whats a good alternative?
zumnwrx 12-30-2005, 08:20 PM do you still have you day time running light function working?
that might be the problem or it might be that your cranking over the engine to start it while the lights are on... those juice shortages put alot of stress on high end bulbs
WRXakaBooSTi 12-30-2005, 08:25 PM i did have drl on, but i ALWAYS turned off my lights when turning on the car.
RS TURBO 12-30-2005, 09:32 PM crazy thread...i just returned home from kragen with new bulbs because my headlight silver stars went out within a week of each other....they're possibly 6 months old...and one of my fogs went within a month of puttin them in...> SILVER STARS SUCK THE ROYAL DICK!!!!
Forget about those ricer bulbs. Just get some HID.
zumnwrx 12-30-2005, 09:56 PM Forget about those ricer bulbs. Just get some HID.
ditto
WRXakaBooSTi 12-30-2005, 10:01 PM ditto
if only HIDs were 30 bucks :(

aznboi320 12-31-2005, 06:11 AM i'm still thinking if i should buy them for my high beams
joltdudeuc 12-31-2005, 12:02 PM The sylvania xtra brights or whatever are cheap, and work really well. They give a whiter light than regualr halogen, and are actually brighter.
you can also try HELLA bulbs.

I3eXa 12-31-2005, 12:58 PM those Osram Silver Star H4 are only like $20 shipped from the UK....can they really be that good????
VRT MBasile 12-31-2005, 01:26 PM another thing to look at is how often you drive with your lights on, it shouldnt make the difference between 4 months and 1+ years.
I3eXa 12-31-2005, 02:03 PM ^^^maybe that would explain it cause I never turn my lights off since they auto off when the key is out. but I did the same thing with the stock bulbs.....
pleiad7 12-31-2005, 03:27 PM those Osram Silver Star H4 are only like $20 shipped from the UK....can they really be that good????
Yes! They are more yellowish, but put out more light and last a whole lot longer than the Sylvania's.
I got the Osrams about a month and a half ago... still working good... they sent me free corner lights to match them as well...
we'll see how long they last.
DetailAddict 12-31-2005, 11:36 PM aww man, I got them two months ago... :( I hope they'll last longer than 4 months...
[W5]IntoTheWRX 12-31-2005, 11:55 PM I got the Osrams about a month and a half ago... still working good... they sent me free corner lights to match them as well...

heard those are pretty good and lasts long. and yea i also heard that the sylvania silverstars have short lifespan too. never actually experienced any of this, but this is what ive been hearing
gooder77 01-01-2006, 12:05 AM I must be in the minority. I've had Silverstars for nearly 3 years with no probs. Now I've jinxed myself.
eastbaysubaru 01-03-2006, 12:25 AM Just go with Sylvania XtraVisions if you're replacing stock bulbs. Better light and longer lasting than their Silverstar cousins.

I've had Silverstars installed for 2 1/2 years now, with daytime running lights on, and they are just as bright as the day I bought them. Beware histrionic posts, they are always the exception rather than the rule.
racerx7 01-13-2006, 12:39 PM YOU SUCK SYLVANIA SILVERSTARS!!!!!
What he said!
Mine also burnt out very quickly. Under three months.
WRXakaBooSTi 01-13-2006, 01:42 PM yeah this quality isnt acceptable considering they cost about $20 each!
I3eXa 01-13-2006, 09:17 PM yeah this quality isnt acceptable considering they cost about $20 each!
more like $24.95! a piece. Or two for $49.95 HA BASTARDS like that's a deal?????
edzwrx 01-24-2006, 09:09 PM Yep. Sylvania Silverstar bulbs SUCK SOO BAD!!! Mine just went out today. Had them for 2 months now.
Scoobyvroom 01-27-2006, 03:02 PM I just wanted to chime in here, bought a 05 XT in August of 04, put in the Silverstars one went out in the spring, the other followed shortly, put new ones in one went out in the fall of 05 and the same one I just replaced just went out, thats 4 bulbs in 1.25 years. That is alot of money for bulbs, these bulbs REALLY, suck. I think I am gonna check out PIAAs..
Chris
try these guys instead... http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk/
get the Osram Silverstars... I'm really happy with mine...

Do you have Osram Silverstars in your lowbeams? Last time I checked, Osram only put out a variety a bulbs, but the H3 was the only one we could utilize (foglights). I have an 03 WRX by the way.
I've got them in my 2000 RS and they have both high and low beams...
wombatsauce 01-30-2006, 10:14 PM I've had Silverstars in my '01 RS since 12/04 with no probs. I had HIDs that came with the car, but one burned out pretty quickly and then I noticed they were installed with duct tape.... I want to get new HIDs as soon as I have a few things sorted out. I have my lights on at all times and have driven about 15k miles with these lights on.
TSwagon 02-07-2006, 05:01 PM I too tried the Silverstars and was not too impresed with the light output. I return and got the Xtravisions. Wow! the DRL is same brightness as my OEMs. I can drive at night with just my DRLs. I have some pictures for oem vs ST vs XV.
I have to resize it first.
taerron 02-26-2006, 04:22 AM i've had my silverstars from 2+ years and have never had a problem. it seems like its hit and miss for how long they last.

YOU SUCK SYLVANIA SILVERSTARS!!!!!
There is ONE place and ONE place only to buy your bulbs:
www.danielsternlighting.com
Stop buying crap China/South Korea made bulbs or buying into the 55W=85W myth of Piaa. The truth? 55W=$85... end of story.
www.danielsternlighting.com We are talking 100% Euro made bulbs... nobody does it better.
I3eXa 04-05-2006, 05:45 PM Hey, if you guys still have your receipts for these sucky sylvania lights and the bulbs (like me) you can return them to Sylvania under their customer satisfaction guarantee and get your money back! :P I've bought probably 4 pairs w just throwing the old ones away :(
1.) get ur store receipt - make a copy to keep for yourself
2.) go here and print/fill out....http://www.sylvania.com/content/display.scfx?id=003680349
3.) pack up lights and mail all this out, should take 2-4 weeks for the money but hey, it will be worth it for me.
Cody
I3eXa 04-05-2006, 06:49 PM Dear Abby,
so which bulbs to get from www.danielsternlighting.com and which have you guys tried/like???
The H3
1.)60/55W Ultra High Efficacy Plus 50 (Tungsram Megalicht, Narva Rangepower+50, Osram Silverstar or Philips VisionPlus*): $17/ea
2.)60/55W Narva Rangepower High Efficacy Plus 30: $11/ea
3.)100/55W Narva: $15/ea
4.)100/90W Narva: $18/ea
5.)130/100W Narva: $19/ea
Of course the more wattage the better so #5 sounds great right? But won't a wiring harness made for 55w bulbs melt trying to power a 130w bulb or high-beam, if you will????
Thanks,
Confused Cody
Mulder 04-06-2006, 06:28 AM Any of those +50 bulbs will give good results. Use the stock wattage ones only, the higher wattage bulbs can damage your wiring and/or light housings from excessive heat.

so these 3.)100/55W Narva: $15/ea should be ok???? Yeah, I just don't wanna overkill my wiring and melt it.

No, 100W is definitely NOT stock wattage. The 60/55's are ok, stay away from anything higher.
I3eXa 04-07-2006, 12:08 AM oh ok. So crap, I guess I threw away my box from those stupid silverstars, anyone have the two bulb packaging, or two single bulb packagings??? Please mail them to me cause I wanna return these stupid lights and get my 46 bucks back!
I3eXa 04-12-2006, 01:25 PM anyone????
Bolshoi125 04-12-2006, 02:16 PM I got 1 on my civic. I like it. no problem so far!
I3eXa 04-13-2006, 12:47 AM ^^^ no no no, I mean I need the packaging so I can send these bulbs back :( Guess I'm SOL
unstble 04-13-2006, 12:10 PM Another good way to get your bulbs to last longer...is to not touch them with your bare hands.
The oils from your hands do some funky stuff to the bulbs
See here: http://www.replacementlightbulbs.com/

That's what I was thinking, my Silverstars have been going strong still for me. I also had a set in my Maxima that lasted at least 2 yrs, and then I sold the car. I always install my lights VERY carefully and never touch anything that could get oil even transferred to the bulb.
4Subaru 04-16-2006, 02:21 AM I just put mine in today, the lights havent been on for more than 2 hours and the driver side has already burned out.
I3eXa 04-16-2006, 02:36 AM I just put mine in today, the lights havent been on for more than 2 hours and the driver side has already burned out.
Hopefully you kept the packaging so you can send them back in for a refund.
4Subaru 12-31-2006, 12:57 AM From my post from 4-16, I went in and xchanged them for some new ones hoping that it was just a faulty one. Well all has been well until i noticed my driver side low beam and my pas side fog light went out today. I think i'm just going to put my money toward some Sti headlights.
Noeladams 12-31-2006, 02:06 PM I have had them in every car I have owned so far without problems. I did have a set pop but just sent them in for warranty.
meilers 12-31-2006, 03:22 PM I just put mine in today, the lights havent been on for more than 2 hours and the driver side has already burned out.
Not even the worst $2 bulbs in existence would burn out that fast. You must have licked them and then dipped them in gasoline before installing them.
Snot Rod 12-31-2006, 08:34 PM In the 2yrs I had Silverstars in my '04 WRX, the low beam set burned out four times! The last set burned out just as the 1yr customer satisfaction period ran out, so I bought some Hellas from the TireRack instead. They aren't as bright as the Sylvanias, but hopefully they'll last longer. (BTW, my DRL's are deactivated)
I've replaced more burned-out headlamp bulbs in my WRX than I have IN ALL THE OTHER CARS I HAVE EVER DRIVEN COMBINED!
-9846465431364929897497646 for Sylvania
WRXakaBooSTi 12-31-2006, 08:52 PM i think its clear, stay away from silverstars if you dont want to lose your money.
get the Osrams... they are much better.
scott0302 01-11-2007, 09:47 PM I thought it was just me. I bought a used 05 with the stocks bulbs and replaced the fog and low beams. I've only been using them since October and have replaced the driverside fog twice; the driver side low beam went dim, I replaced it; passenger low beam went out the next day...replaced it. passenger low beam is now dim again and I don't feel like changing it.
BadDoctorFrost 01-16-2007, 04:57 PM I haven't read the whole thread, so I don't know if it's been said or not. SilverStars have thinner filaments inside them to counter the effect of the tinted bulb. The thinner filament doesn't last nearly as long as a regular bulb, but at the same time increases your light output and provides whiter light. Even though they don't last long, they're still the best bulbs on the market, and the safest, if you want that ricey-fake-Xenon look.
Wrxzero557 01-25-2007, 06:55 PM i had good luck with piaa bulbs even with day time running lights they lasted years
I just wana make sure the 03+ impreza's low beam headlight number is H1, is this correct?
Mulder 01-30-2007, 05:26 AM 02/03 is 9007 dual-filament, 04-05 is H1 low, 9005 high.
err.. I have an 07, I'm guessing it's different then.
