wheel painting or powdercoating..
i want to paint a set of rims the bbs gold.. but what i want is to be done right and be a durable job... i know that gettin the rims powder coated would be alot of work and money.. but i mean i want it done right.. now with painting the rims with car paint or spray paint, i most likely would get it painted at a shop but i dont know the color code or the specific name of the gold color... i want this done the right way and not have to worry about the paint chipping.... so what do you guys think i should do..
I painted my wheels with duplicolor wheel paint and clearcoat (rattle-can), its been about 4-5 months and no chipping, wheels came out very nice looking. Its very easy to do it yourself, it just takes a lot of time to sand/prep the wheels.
Powdercoating is nice, but expensive and it can weaken the wheels.

the only thing that is wrong with painting is that if i get the duplicolor, it doesnt have the gold that i want, only a bronze... but then again i could just go to a shop and get it painted with car paint, and then with a thick clear coat?? dont you think that would be alot more durable than the duplicolor, and alot easier and cheaper than powerdercoating...
I'm going through the same deliema. I was thinking about getting my 5 spokes powdercoated but I've read the same thing about it causing the wheel to become weak. Getting wheels painted at the shop is my best bet at the moment. The only problem is that I don't know how strong the paint will hold up, esp when I get tires mounted on them. I guess I'll ask for like... 5 layers of clearcoat.
About DIY spray painting, I've done it but when it comes to mounting tires, the paint on rim of the wheel chips. Maybe I didn't use enough clear coat or maybe the spray paint isn't super strong. owell

I didnt even take the tire off, I just wedged index cards in between the tire and rim. Surprisingly, that method works great. No overspray onto the tire and the wheel gets completely covered. Of course I took the wheel/tire of the vehicle
Im sure a reputable paint shop could match the BBS gold and do a great job, I wouldnt worry about it chipping, just tell whoever mounts it to be carefull. I originally wanted mine painted by a shop, but DIY is way cheaper - I spent about $50 on 2 cans bronze, 2 cans clearcoat, lots of sandpaper/wetsand, tack cloth, sponge, index cards and asatone...oh yeah many hours of my weekend.
If any one wants to check them out, I can email pics
