street tire for track
Is there a street tire that will hold up on the track for the STI?
I am running the Kumho Ecsta MX good tire but has worn quickly. The goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 has good reviews but I have seen threads saying it starts to shread after a few laps.
Would it be cheaper to buy a set of rotas and R compound for the track?
I know the car would handle better but would I end up replacing 2 sets every 8 months instead of 1 set every 4 months?
I also run the car in autocross STU novice so I need a decent street tire.
Thanks,
John

Actually, the RE070s are really good for both trck and street tire autocross classes. I'd definitely ride those until they wear out, and maybe even buy a set of wheels and plain old street tires to drive around on, and save the 70s for track and autocross). But, buying a dedicated set of track wheels and some R-compounds like RA-1s or Pilot Sport Cups or something isn't a bad move. You should get at least 5 or 6 track days out of your track tires, maybe more if you're conservative with them. I'm definitely going to be getting a set of track wheels and tires myself.
hey ban suvs... what do u think of the yoko's avs 100, i just bought some rota rims and i wanna buy new tires i heard, they were good tires.. what do u think and what tires do u recommend.
oh im looking for street and track tires.. mostly for the street that will grip really good.

The Kumho MXs are said to be a "near R" compound tire. Wait until you start running R compound, then you will really see some fast wear. If I were doing the track, I'd get a dedicated set of rims and tires for the track and another for the street. That would probably save you $$$ in the long run.

Yeah I will probably end up getting a third set of rims for the track later this year, not in the budget right now.
So now I have to decide between another set of Kumho Mx or the Goodyear F1.
I have an urge to try a new tire but the Kumhos were nice.
Thanks,
John

My other set of rims have winter tires on them for the dirt.
The stock tires were toast at 8000 miles. Although I did kill the Mxs in 5000.
So I just have to figure out if the MX or F1 will hold up better until I get the R compund.

I put the 235 Mxs on and liked them. There are people running 245 or 255 in autocross, probably have to role the fenders at that point.
Being you have an 05 the 235 will fit the rim even better. Some brands make a 235/40 as well, less sidewall flex but harsher ride.

but if you want a tire that FEELS like a track tire on and off the track and also is about 50% quieter than the SO-3s, the F1s seem to be a good choice.

Actually I'll jump in and say that yes, they're an excellent street tire.
There wasn't much dropoff in terms of street use between the bridgestones and the goodyears. The S03s have slightly stiffer sidewalls, but I mostly made up for that with higher pressures in the Goodyears.

So did the F1 hold up with track use?
With the F1, Pilot sport PS2, and S03 I can also run the 235/40 and lower my car a little as the tire is close to the spring purch now.

No, the GSD3s didn't take the heat, literally. I do drive relatively, ah, aggressively, but they didn't hold up as well as either set of S03s I had. Then, I got them really greasy after just 5 autocross runs at the end of the season last year. If you intend to use your street tires at the track or for autocross, I'd spring for the S03s or PS2s. If they're strictly for the street, then they're great.

So now the choice is down to the Pilot sport or the S03. Any suggestions?
The reviews at tire rack look similar. The mileage and quiteness seem better for the pilots but this is hard to quantify as most people don't tack their car to the track 4 times a yr.
