good 17 inch wheels and tires are the best and first thing you should do for a WRX.

If you're on a budget, tires are the first mod you should make. The stock RE92's are HORRIBLE!!! If you can afford a bit more, go for 17x7.5's with nice sticky tires. Then move onto suspension mods (coilovers recommended). If you have some spare money lying around, consider also strut bars.

Man, I've seen 18x8 and they look huge on a WRX. Furthermore, it seems a lot of people prefer 17" over 18"

Dunno. 18x8.5 will most likely fit, but the might be a little to big regardless.

18 x 8.5 would stick out a little far .. I'm running 18 x 8's and they fit well.

Wanna know what my first mod's gonna be????

I'm liking the Dunlop SP 5000's, personally.....
You knew they were RE92s before it started raining.

go for 17x7.5's just like everyone else is telling you. These tires would be an excellent choice for those wheels.

Dont make the mistake of buying expensive rims and some cheap tires. IMO tires are the best first mod and I would buy some S03's and 17x7.5 rims. Also make sure you buy rims with the correct offset unless you want to end up paying around $700 on new wheel bearings.
