A Million Dollar Question.....

I asked this question on NASIOC as well.... I Hope someone can help with this.

I don't under stand way more people are not getting wider rims?? I want to get 17X9 for my 05 STI.... But no one is running them. I think the widest rim I hear any body is running is an 8.5in. If I'm going to spend money on new rims I want a bigger size.

I want to know what works with the following rims. These are all sizes that they currently sell in Japan, and in the US.

-Volk CE28N in a 17X9
-Gram Lights 57F 17X9.5
-5zigen GN+ 17X9.5
-5zigen RN01R-C 17X9
-Advan RGII 17X9 and 17X9.5
-Advan RS 17X9 and 17X9.5
-Advan TCII 17X9.5

I understand some fender rolling or moding may be needed, but if I'm going to get bigger rims I'm going BIG and not the same size of the 05 STI BBS which are very good rims in my eyes and would be hard to replace if I got the same size rim.... If someone can help clear this up I would be very happy.....

The answer may be that, body or suspension rub aside, that without the proper suspension components a wider wheel/tire does not always means a wider footprint.

More weight. Tires/wheels cost more.

On a WRX, lightweight 17X7.5 and sticky 225 will match any straight line torque you can put down on road. If you break traction with this much grip available, the stock drivetrain is at risk.

For a stock STI, you might want to go little wider with light rims, but I think 9" is just going to slow you down.

If you don't mind sacrificing that acceleration for better cornering, then maybe 9" is OK if you can make them fit. It's going to be hard to steer those suckers.

You did not list any cheap rims - but the answers you got were reponsive to the question asked

Unsprung weight is unsprung weight ~ clear and simple? It's the enemy. BIG wheels BIG tires equal BIG weight right where you don't want it. It will effect everything. Acceleration, braking, cornering et. al.

Step up a bit, say 18" 8 with 225/40/18's and you have more then enough grip and lack of sidewall flex. Good Luck.

get a hold of krinkov. if i'm not mistaken, he was running a shorter spring on his coil-overs and i believe he was running 10.5'' wheels. he may still have the wheels for sale.

A guy in Milwaukee was running a 17x9 at the track (auto-x) after using a 18x10 and he said that his times were better with the 17" he also had 0% body roll. He had both sets with him both had the same rubber compound and make.

I know I run a 245/45/17 and I had to make a few minor adjustments to the rear end quarter pannels for them to fit.
