Question Maximum width wheel tire combo you can run on WRX

Just wondering if anybody knows the maximum wheel tire combo width you can run on the WRX without clearance issues. i was wanting to run a 17x8-9 wheel with 245-255 tires. Also would want to know if it is possible to run this width of tire what offset the wheels need to be. Thanks

It depends on the year and body style of your car. '02-03 wagons can have rubbing issues with 225s depending on wheel width and offset, while '06 WRX sedans can easily accomodate 255/40R17s, again depending on wheel width and offset. If you have a bugeye sedan, you can fit most 235 or 245/40R17s on a 17x8 with an offset between 42 and 48 without rubbing.

Do you know what you can fit under an '04 Sedan?

If your offset is 42 or greater, preferably 45-48, you can run most 245/40R17s no problem. 17x8 is plenty for that.

My wrx is an 06. i was going to put a set of cusco coilovers on it and wanted to run a set of 17x8 245 width tires, even lowered with the coilovers can i get away with this, or can i even go larger and throw on 17x9 255's?

It depends on how low you want to go. Lowering the proper way with coilvers essentially means moving your wheels farther up the strut without changing spring rates. The closer you move the wheel to the fenders (obviously) the less room you have for larger tires. You definitely can fit 17x8s with coilovers, but how low you can go may be limited. You should be able to get at least an inch of lowering though, even with 245s.

Remember that increasing your width will increase your diameter as well. A 245/40 will be much more likely to rub than a 245/35 if you can get it.

Why go with 17x9? 17x8 is plenty, 17x8.5 is better for a 245 and more common than 17x9, not to mention the weight advantage. Anyways, the wider your wheel, the wider your tire's section width will be, so expect the rubbing issue to get slightly worse- which may be a LOT worse depending on just exactly where it is and how close it already gets to whatever is rubbing.

WTF are you trying to say? B/C what you posted does not make sense. 245 is the width. It makes no difference if its a 245/35/20 or a 245/75/16. 245mm is 245mm. Now, you are right in that a 40 series will be taller than a 35 series, and that will make a (5%) difference in diameter. I assume that you are/were having a bad day b/c you must know better...

Okay bud. Go try to mount a 245/75 on your wheels and come back and tell me it won't rub. In any given width, a taller tire will rub more than a shorter one. This is why you see certain autocross classes with entries that have the tires sticking 3" out of uncut/unmodded fenders. See almost any CSP Miata for an example. Speaking from experience, I had 235/40 S03s on my Rs, and they didn't rub. 245/40 might not have, and 245/45 DEFINITELY would have. Your wheel wells are three dimensioanl, you know...

Okay, defend this statement:

If you meant, for example, that going from a 235/40 to a 245/40 will increase the OD, then yes you are you are correct. But that is not what you wrote. (As you know, a 245/35 will have a smaller OD than either of the above.)

P.S. No need to be so defensive...
