Have you had these tires?
Need to replace new, OEM RE92's. These tires are so noisy I can hardly believe it. My OBS's stock CD player is no match for the road noise these tires make. I know, the stock CD player is junk, but I will replace the tires first, then the stereo.
Would appreciate comments on these tires for a rainy climate (Portland-Seattle). Quietness is very important. Handling is not as important, but of course, I'd like a tire that excells at all three - rain traction, quietness, handling.
I am considering:
Dunlop 5000
Dunlop SP Sport A2
Bridgestone RE950
Also, please post any recommendations on other suitable tires. I have crossed Michelin off my list as I am boycotting France.

I run SP5000's on my WRX. Terrific in the rain and real good in the snow. Highly recommended. Good value for your $$$$$$$$
I put the SP Sport A2's on my daughter's VW Cabrio and was surprised at how quiet the car rode and how well it handled. The previous tires on the car were BFG Comp T/A's HR series which is definitely old technology. BTW, she has raved about wet weather handling all winter long.
If you have a WRX, I would go for the SP5000's..........

well...
just today, I got a new set of Dunlop Sp 5000's, and as I was driving home, my initial impression was pretty darn good. They cut through the rain on I-95 (with grooved pavement) fairly well, as I was merging onto the highway.
They were a little pricey, but $512.40 for all four wheels, mounted and balanced, PLUS a free 4 wheel alignment, I feel was a fairly good deal.
Good luck, and I will let you know how they hold up in the dry weather and snow, if/when we get some again.

driving in the rain...
today in NY proved to be very nice. The tires can definately handle anything that you put them through. The twisties are handled very nicely, and there doesn't seem to be much "squirm" in the tires. Much better than the RE92's for sure.
As far as road noise, some seems to have dissipated, and it's not as apparent on concrete roads, versus tarmac. I would have to say that these tires are a quiter than the RE92's, as a comparison.
I will have to see how they perform in dry conditions, but they seem to do really well in the rain. Glad that I got them.
As far as Dunlop Sport A2's on a WRX, well, I would not do that, as they seem to be H-rated tires...but on an Outback, I would figure that they would be alright. But as WRX's seem to come stock with V rated tires, I decided to go with those instead. Not much difference in price either...the A2's were about 98 a piece, versus the Sport 5000's which were 110 a piece.
Hope that helps.

Just replaced the training wheels (RE-92s) on my 2000 2.5RS to B.F. Goodrich g force KDWS all season tire. The original tires were always a weak link in the actual handling of the suby in all weather conditions, even dry. However; when I modded the RS and added around 35 H.P. the original tires performance was horrid. On comes the g-force and to say they are excellent in every respect is truly an understatement. The only allweather tire that outperforms these tires are the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and the reason I didn't buy them, is I have an unexplained prejustice against Michelin.

I would have to say that Bridgestone makes really good rain tires, for example, the S03PP. The RE950 was based off that tire only to be more of an all-season tire. I have friends that run on the RE950s and they say they like them and will not get any other tire. But then again, everyone has their own opinion. My favorite tire was the S02PPs. Even though they are not produced anymore I miss them.

How about the noise level on the 950's?
I know I keep asking the same question. I never would have imagined that noise level would be an important consideration, but the RE92's have taught me otherwise. Unless, of course, the OBS is just a really noisy car in which case changing tires won't help. But it can't be much different than the TS, RS, or WRX.

Check out tirerack.com, they have some good reviews of tires as well as rims (in case your interested) They also have customer reviews, and while it's true some tires are noiser then others, some of it is subjective to the listener.
Another site that has some reviews of tires is carreview.com
(there's also a tirereview.com but I think it's more of a industry site, haven't checked it out myself)

As for road noise, Rotorflyr is right. Everyone will have their own definition or level of noisy that can be tolerated. I have been in the car and I thought it was comfortable. This means for me that the road noise was like nothing and the ride was really smooth. Then again, I am used to running tires that make a lot of noise and so my levels are all different.
