Ok, so how much are you willing to spend? To get max grip, I suggest 245/45/17 Kumho V710's. Barry and Ken can confirm this. Mind that if you're driving an STI, you will need wheels w/ 48 offset and width of 7.5" to 8.5" to house this size rubber. As for wheels, there are quite a bit out there. ROTA's are always cost effective.

However, I strongly suggest getting as much saddle time w/ street tires and then upgrading. Note that R-Compounds are not as forgiving once they break loose. I've run Victor racers, V700's and RA1's and the Victor Racers are probably the best choice w/ a wide range of sizes, versus the V710's. However, if gearing is important, only the V700's come in 40 series. What size do you want to run?

on the other hand Falken Azenis are pretty popular, street legal, and won't break the bank. just don't take a road trip.

I ran the Azenis sport on my 02 WRX and they were ok. Great street tire. However, at auto-X you will gain 2-3 seconds at the Hawaii track running Kumho V700's in comparison. I've tested this.

Thanks for the props. I'm humbled by your comment.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Bdrift, AKA Mr. FTD also has tons of experience w/ a wide range of R-compounds as well as Ken Van Orman. BTW, what size are you gonna run? That may be a limiting factor, as tires like V710 are not available in 225's.

Guys, one important question was never asked - is he going for AS, SP, or STU? AS or SP then the R compound tires are the answer. If STU (like I am in), then the question really gets complicated. Currently, on my stock rims, I am using the BFG KD in 245/40/17. But now I am going to switch to a 17X9 rim, and the tire choice goes between the Falken Azenis 615 in 245/45/17 or the Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 in 245/40/17.
